i am an IBEW electrican. and GFCI is a ground fault circuit interrupter. this device measures the amount of amps going out on the hot wire and Comag back on the neutral wire and will trip around 5Mili amps. that's .005 amps. this is to protect people from electrical shock not appliances. surge protectors just protect Appliances from a surge allowing more voltage than the Appliance is rated for and frying it. no they would not do the same thing

A surge protector is designed to prevent a surge in voltage, (normal voltage in a residence is btwn 115V and 125V with most at 121V. This prevents damage to sensitive appliances such as computers.
A GFCI (Ground fault circuit interrupter) is a safety device to protect people and animals from electric shock should a cord, home appliance or something a person may touch become energized.

A GFI is intended to protect a person from shock,a surge protector to protect electrical equipment from damage due to a surge of electricity.

They are completly different.
Surge protectors are designed to protect appliances from power surges.
GFI are designed to protect people from electrocution.

I think they're different a surge protecter protects your appliences from electrical surges. i thing a surge suppresser stops your applience kicking out too many amps. like an acdc adapter ithink. though cud b wrong. hope this is some help. Cathy xx
