Is nuclear power about to stage a come-back in the USA?

Item: "President Obama next week will announce a loan guarantee to build the first nuclear power plant in the United States in almost three decades, an administration official said Friday."

Does this signal a resurgence of nuclear power in the USA or will it be blocked by a new wave of nationwide protests and concerns from residents living near proposed nuke plants? Do you favor building new nuclear plants? If so, would you feel comfortable living near one?

Let's hope so. I'd have no problem - there's a nuclear plant about 25 - 30 miles from where i live and i never give it a second thought (well, once, when i grew a sixth finger on one hand).

I also think wind turbines look great - don't see the problem with them at all. Stick one in my garden any day.

Just get on with it and stop the panicked bleating about the world ending!

First off, I don't think he meant it, but now when it gets shouted down, he can say see, I was for it but couldn't get it done.

I hope we get nuclear power and yes it could be built near me. Nuclear power plant technology has improved since we quit using it. France gets something like 75% of their energy from Nuclear and they are safe. If we want to get off oil, we need something else, wind mills and solar panels aren't going to work.

My guess is that it does not, because of security. In addition to the historic risks, nuclear plants are a horribly enticing target to terrorists; not only because of their dangers to health but also because they are tremendously expensive and a highly centralized power source.
