Mixing Red Bull with oxycodone is not going to cause you any ill effects if that is your concern. However if you are wanting to know how effective it will be at counteracting the side effects of oxycodone then it will just depend on patient-specific factors. The main ingredient in red bull that has any real efficacy in your level of alertness is caffeine. If you are someone that has a high tolerance for caffeine and/or are someone who does not get a very dramatic systemic effect from caffeine, then it may do nothing to combat the drowsiness that the oxycodone causes you.

Your best bet is to either hire a babysitter or get a friend or family member to come over and stay with you while you take this medication. This way in the event that you cannot combat the side effects of the drug and you fall asleep, there will at least be another person there who is able to take care of your son and make sure that he is ok and has what he needs.

If you cannot do that, then I advise that you call your doctor right away to discuss alternative medications. Being a single parent or a parent who has been left with the responsibility of taking care of a toddler alone, you just cannot afford to have your alertness and reactions altered in a way that oxycodone is capable of doing. I would suggest looking into Tramadol. Because Tramadol has both an opioid component and an SNRI component, it is very effective at managing pain and does not usually give rise to side effects like making the patient sleepy, drowsy or lethargic.

EDIT: Just to respond to one of the comments above:

It is not a question of whether or not people who are being treated with opiates should care for children while they are on the drug. Some people can take opiates without expericing any major systemic effects. Some people can take opiates and experience no systemic effects. Then there are some who experience very severe systemic effects to the point where their reflexes are dramatically effected, their judgement is dramatically effected and their level of alertness is dramaitcally effected. It is this group of people that should probably take extra measures and precautions while they are taking these medications and are in the charge of caring for a young child. Since this person has stated that they are a patient who does experience the systemic effect of getting very sleepy while on oxycodone and this effect has made them concerned about how this could effect their son, then there is nothing wrong with suggesting that they speak with their doctor about it and see what they can do to deal with this issue. Their is also nothing wrong with the person taking precautions while on this drug and carring for the son until a better situation can be achieved, and in fact this is something that should happen.

It is ridiculous and there is ZERO evidence that people on OxyContin should not supervise kids. People taking opioids chronically don't even have a problem driving according to a large number of studies.

Did you just start the OxyContin recently? Do you have much opioid tolerance? If you are just starting to take opioids your side effects will get better.

You should be fine having caffeine with opioids. There is one possible risk but I almost hate to bring it up. When people take the very strong opioids, especially continuously, and they have caffeine there can, rarely, be some cognitive changes and a person might not "feel like they are really there." It is typically a mild thing and it does not last long, and, again, it is rare. So you might consider having something with less caffeine and see how you do. And once another person is around you might consider some experimenting with caffeine to see how you do. You should be fine but that is really your only risk.

Also sometimes when people first start opioids and they have severe tiredness some doctors prescribe a very mild stimulant like Provigil (modafinil) to help with the side effects for a few weeks. Some people who really have no option and must take opioids yet have a lot of sedation might take stimulants long term. Actually the strong stimulants, amphetamines like Adderall and Dexedrine, are used in people with severe pain and side effects to reduce side effects and because amphetamines make opioids stronger. Hopefully you will not need that but if your tiredness is really an issue talk to your doctor. Even if the caffeine is fine it is not a good long term option.

i get hyper but here is why The caffeine in one serving is similar to that found in an average cup of brewed coffee (typically 100 mg/250 ml cup, but 72 mg for a U.S. regular 6 fluid ounces cup of coffee) or twice as much as found in a can of Coke (40 mg/330 ml can). A sugar-free version has been available since the beginning of 2003. Sugar-free Red Bull is sweetened with aspartame and acesulfame potassium, as opposed to sucrose and glucose.

if you are watching a kid you would be smart to not take oxycontin. You should take a lower strength pain med. You should deal with the pain a bit to keep your kid healthy

you will be fine. just don't mix any other pills with it. a little bit of alcohal is ok ( 2 or 3 beers) so red bull definatley won't threaten anything
