If you are consistently uploading videos that get watched all the way through you will get invited to be a You Tube partner. Then, they will place ads on your video and give you money based on how many views you get and how many people click the ads.
The number of views required has changed since they started using the "bounce rate" in their algorithm so don't let people tell you that a video has to have X number of views or you need X number of subscribers - It matters most that people finish your video and it helps when people re-watch days later from the same IP address.
Here is a tutorial to get you a few thousand views and if your videos are indeed somewhat entertaining, you will be on your way:)

It basically is a popular Youtuber who has a lot of subscribers. You know is someone is a partner if they have a banner on their homepage.
