Cheapest place to get live rock?
I live near Charlotte NC. I don't mind mail order if the shipping won't kill me. Thanks

If you want to save money, I suggest getting mostly dry rock and seeding with a few pounds of premium live rock. Dry rock could be tufa rock or just dried "live" rock that may be found at your local fish store. The best local live rock is usually from other people breaking down their tanks. Check craigslist and local reef clubs for these sources. My link below is a good listing of US reef clubs. Buyer beware! Some local tanks may be of poor quality (maybe too much nuisance algae or pest anemones), and you should try to get a picture of the tank setup to see if it was kept up well.
For ordering live rock, I suggest getting florida rock because of its high quality and short transportation times. See my second link for one such site.

hey there, ive noticed around me in chicago texas holey rock just went up to 4.99 a lb at all the local pet shops, used to be 3.99, believe it or not some of the cheapest rock ive found was on ebay, and not the small 1 or 2 pound pieces, i found 12-15 pound pieces going in the 20's, can break it up urself if ur careful, but other than that not many options here, i ve found people on craigslist who were breaking down their tanks and were selling it pretty cheap. good luck!!

if you can find the cheapes live rock you can near you (some places go around $5 a pound, the coasts seem to be cheaper than the midwest... sucks for me o_o ) you can cut the cost by mixing it with some lace rock, lime stone, sandstone, lava rock, tufa rock, pumice, shale, slate, or basalt... texas holey rock is cool too, but i'm personally not much of a fan of it
the "normal" rock will become live over time and should only cost around $2-4 a pound
you can also find formerly live rock for cheap, usually sold as "coral rock" it's around $2-3 a pound
you can also check on ebay/craiglist/local classifieds for people seeling rock or tearing down their old SW setups. you can also find cheap equipment this way too...

The cheapest place is in the sea (free). Be sure it's legal to collect it where you find it, though.
