lie bumps on your tongue. how do they happen?

I had a bump on my tongue for 3 days. and it hurt all the time. how long dose it take to go away? and how come if you cut it off it hurts for about 15 mins then dose not hurt anymore? is that bad to do? what are the long term affects?
