It dates back to "libra", the Latin word for pound. lb is an abbreviation for libra, and the -s is added to make it plural, "pounds".

The height/weight rule of thumb for females is 100 pounds for the first 5 feet of height and then 5 pounds for every inch above that. The rule of thumb for a male is 106 pounds for the first 5 feet of height and then 6 pounds for every inch above that.

It is an abbreviation for the Latin word for "pound", Libra. The British unit of currency was originally a pound of silver, and their symbol-- a stylized "L" -- has been chosen for that reason.
