In cold weather: lightly rev a cold engine or just start it up and let it sit and idle?
I have heard both ways are both good and bad for your engine. If it's 20 degrees out and snowing, after I start my car up, is it OK to LIGHTLY rev the engine around 1-2 RPM for a couple minutes to warm it up or just let the engine sit and idle for a few minutes....then drive away?
Like I said I get a different answer every time I ask someone.....general advise please

Modern cars and modern lubricants need less "warm up" time than older cars and oils did. Start the engine, let it idle for 30 seconds or so, and then just drive away - gently for the first few minutes. The 30 second warm up (NO revving) is to be sure the oil pressure has had a chance to build up, and lubricant is flowing through all bearings, etc. The normal driving will warm the engine up just fine.

never rev an engine when it,s cold.just start it and let it warm up on it,s own. if you start reving it you could throw a rod.
