My son would like to go and study in America, is it possible for him to do this?
He will be 18 years old in August 2010. He would like to go to Minnesota to study. We know absolutely nothing about the American education system. He has an aunt out there and thought it would be a good experience for him. If it is possible, how would we go about arranging it?
thank you
He is in England. He has two aunts that live in Minnesota.
Just would like to say thank you to everybody but two - you know who you are!!!
There is some very useful information here.
Again - thank you
thank you all for the information - plenty for me to start investigating.
Funny - thank you for your comments - I am sure he will have a wonderful time. We know it is cold coz we get updates from his auntes regularly.

Are you asking about university?
Yes, it is definitely possible.
He will be able to come over here and complete a degree. Most bachelor degree programs are 4 years in length in the US, occasionally 5 years. Unlike uni in other countries, he would study a variety of different subjects for the first 2 years and then concentrate in one area of specialization for his last 2 years (called his 'major').
If he is intending to start uni next autumn then he may be a little too late in applying for American Uni's as most wanted applications in by last December for autumn 2010 admission, especially if he were looking for financial aid. Most American Uni's (esp the good one's) want international students to have taken the SAT as well, which is a test that is used to predict the student's ability to take on higher education. Your son will most likely need to take this test to get into an decent American uni. I'll give you the link below to show you how to sign up for the test.
The one major issue that many international students have when coming to an American Uni is the price. The average American uni will charge $15,000 or more a year for tuition for an international student. Unless your son is the best of the best in academics then he cannot expect to get much if anything in the way of financial aid. So, altogether you are looking at AT LEAST $80,000 for the next four years for your son.
Here is the tuition rate for the University of Minnesota for international students:

I wouldn't rush into anything for your son concerning this issue. There are many different factors to consider. I would suggest having him look into uni in his home country and see if he could study abroad in the US for a year as an option...

When is he going? How long does he want to study? For a 4 year degree, or just a semester? Look up universities in Minnesota and find out about their foreign student programs. Most US universities have foreign student programs, some of which last for 6 weeks or so and some that last for all of the college education.
Just found this:

Look around on the site, or even better, email a staff member and ask them. Good luck!

Contact the American Embassy about getting a student visa. Have his aunt's check with the education authorities in Minnesota.

Well I live in Minnesota and am also studying here. Is it possible that your son is coming to Macalester College? Well wherever he is planning to study, just tell him it's gonna be really cold. But apart from that it's a very nice state, friendly people, lots of lakes and definitely a culturally rich atmosphere. He will have an enlightening experience.

I'm sorry that this won't answer your question in any way, but there is an answer somewhere above me that says America is a "dumpy" place to study, or something along those lines.
This is not true.
I just wanted to assure you that America still has a great education system, as far as universities go. (As for the state schools...maybe not, but America does have some of the best private universities in the world ^^)

He would have to do two things. First, he would have to apply to universities in Minnesota, and the subject matter in which he is interested and his academic record would determine his eligibility for each one. Most American universities have information on their websites for international students and what exams, records, etc., they will need in order to apply.
Secondly, he would need a student visa to allow him to do this. You haven't mentioned which country he is now in, but the availability of such visas are easier to get in some countries, I'm afraid, than they are in others.
