alcoholism and deployment?
My friend is in the army and he is set to deploy within the next few months. He has recently informed his commanding officers that he has realized he is an alcoholic and he is going to some substance abuse program tomorrow. Will they still deploy him like this?

Its very possible they will
From a CO's perspective, they are concerned about the mission, and in the military, you are basically 'government property'. I knew guys ending up with disciplinary action for getting too sun burnt. If your friend is truely an alcoholic they and they have a willing replacement, that could be an option if the CO appoves it, but more than likely, needs of the military comes first and if you have a personal problem, they deal with it later...usually at your own expense.
They might deploy and take note though by restricting movement during off-duty time. That way your friend can't get into trouble.....no place like the field for drying out.

I also have issues with my Alcoholism . I posted my question on wish123 and got an answer from an expert who solved my problem. Worth a try.
