Birds have a tough time finding food sometimes, especially now that many of their habitats are being destroyed. In the winter, it is even more difficult for them to find food and shelter from the weather. Many people set up feeders in their yards with covered boxes sometimes, so the birds can go inside temporarily from out of the cold. Seed is given to the birds, and the birds fascinate the yard owners.

The colors and scents of flowering gardens attract some birds to backyards. As they seek the nectar of the flowers, they can help with pollination. There is one type of bird that almost every person likes to put up a feeder for. That would be the hummingbird. My mom has been putting a feeder out on the branch of a big maple tree in her yard for the hummingbirds for over 30 years. Years ago, I asked her why she did this. She said that the same birds come back year after year (she call tell by their markings) and she said that it gives her something beautiful to watch every spring and summer.

    To enjoy having them close.

To supplement their feed sources in hard times.

To hope they will eat garden pests as well as the supplied food.

It's much easier than traveling to another location and feeding them there.

It's cheaper than buying cat food, she can catch her own.
