Flying with my 15lb dog?
Some info first:
Traveling from Hawaii to the midwest in late summer or early fall.
I have a dog who is a mix but he is about the size of a small Welsh Corgi or a large dachsund.. Basically he is about 15-18lbs (we aren't sure yet and have to go weigh him soon) and is longer bodied with a little bit shorter legs like some spaniels have. I am trying to find out what type of carrier would work best for taking him with my husband and I when we move back to the mainland. We are trying to figure out any possible way to get him on as carry-on so he isn't as stressed as in cargo since he is small, but most carriers seem to be too short for his body. He is about 20 inches long to the middle of his head so if he is curled like he normally is when laying, he would be comfy. I have never flown with a dog and am trying to find out everything I possibly can in the months leading up to when we have to move back.
Thank you for any suggestions you can provide! We have found a small hard shelled carrier but his body was just a little too long. Any suggestions of certain brands to check out or a certain store that has a large selection to check out, would be greatly appreciated!!! Thank you!!!
- moving FROM Hawaii - just need health certificate and stuff.. that won't be the problem.
- probably using United, American, or Hawaiian Airlines. I looked up all their sites but am just trying to find a carrier that he could fit in comfortably and am not sure of any that are meant for longer dogs without being larger in the other dimensions necessarily.
The Sherpa roll-up one is looking promising. Another thing - are airlines really actually picky about your dog being able to 'turn around' and everything? A lot of the sites say your dog has to be able to lay down, stand up, turn around..well since he is a long bodied dog, he would have to have a carrier that is as wide as long...which is unrealistic.. I just didn't know what all they really do when checking your dog - other than weight.
I want him to be comfy but I don't think he needs to be turning all the way around a bunch...

We decided on a Sherpa bag! Hopefully he fits in it well :-) Based on the measurements, he should fit comfortably. We will find out when it arrives.
Thanks!

Sherpa brands are specifically designed for airlines BUT depending on who you are flying with will depend on the dimensions allowed (and weight of dog/carrier combined) to bring you animal on board as carry on. Anything over and above these limits - the dog will be shipped in a pressurized/climate controlled cargo space. Most airlines specify that an animal should be able to stand up and turn around for the height of the carrier.
Before shipping your dog you need to specifically look up Hawaii's pet policies. I can't quote them off the top of my head but when I moved my cat from Canada to USA, I distinctly remember Hawaii having specifications even for animals from the lower 48 States.
Most airlines also require that you animal has a Health Certificate within 30 days of travel time from your vet.

Pet-friendly accommodations make it possible to travel widely with your dog--but regulations and requirements mean it's crucial to plan all the details first.
