Is it possible to put polyurethane varnish as a top coat on a French polished Table?
Thank you , all are contemplated! It`s a very beautiful working dining Table for every day use . It so often gets marked. It is being restored just now only 2more coats to finish. As much as I would like to keep it original Polyurethane is much more practical If it is doable .

Why in the world would you want to? A natural, hand rubbed shellac finish is gorgeous. I say just fix the original shellac. If you insist on putting down polyurethane, yes, it will work, but it will basically destroy the table.

Do you know how French Polishing is done? If you do, you really shouldn't be asking that question. If you don't, find out. You'll change your mind(I hope)

You are better of putting glass over the table. the varnish will turn cloudy if you get it wet.
Source(s): They come with clear laquer from the factory. - tipsterLv 51 decade ago
FIRST use auto body prep solution called WAX &silicone remover! LIGHTLY SAND WITH 320 GRIT SANDPAPER! APPLY 2 OR 3 COATS OF POLYURTHANE! USE CUATION WITH WAX REMOVER!
