  • Where Can I Get a Gas Meter?

I want to purchase a gas meter, preferably old and cheap yet still accurate. I have 4 appliances using natural gas (NG). I have a furnace (the appliance I want to meter), a water heater (on demand, not boiler type), a gas stove/oven (I love my old Magic Chef 1938), and a pool heater. Where can I purchase a meter that will tell me what my furnace is using? The heating system is a heat pump/gas backup system, I just want to know what it's using as far as gas is concerned.

Surely there is an old 1950s to 1980s gas meter out there for sale. No RFID, no advanced electronics, no nothing. Just an old gas meter. Where are they?

And cheap, did I mention cheap?

  • High Plains Drifter: Tactics?

I just watched this movie the other day and I started to think, instead of going through all the trouble the townsfolk went through, why didn't Clint Eastwood just snipe the 3 bandits? I realize that the modern sniper rifle hadn't been invented yet, Barret .50, Winchester .30-06, etc, but wouldn't it have been easier to just shoot the bandits from long range? Even back then you could reliably reach out and touch someone from 500+ yards. Certainly not the 1.5 miles away that a trained sniper can hit from today, but far enough. I hate painting, BTW. I'd have told him to fcuk off and grabbed my Kar-98. Perhaps the time frame is a little too early for that weapon, but how about a .30-30 Winchester? A Whitworth? It simply seems an enormous waste of time to paint a town and hire a specialist for what should have been a short, long distance encounter.

  • Has true genocide ever been commited in human history?

We all know that ethnic groups have been subject to genocidal programs, but I don't think that any of these programs have been successful. People throw this term around not really knowing what it means. The only true genocide I can think of during human history (and it might better be termed an extinction or cross-breeding out of existence situation) is the complete removal of Neanderthal man.

Many groups have been trageted over the years and many have died, but no true genocide has ever actually been carried out. I don't think that a true genocide can happen. Localized, perhaps, but not a true extermination of every example of a particular people.

Give me an example of a true genocide that was planned with intent, forethought, planning, and execution. World-killing impacts don't count.

  • Full on F1 Car Driven by God?

OK. No restrictions. No rev limiters, no wood boards, no restriction on exotic materials (Be-Al pistons and Be-Cu valve seats), no restriction on driver adjusted wings, no DRS zones (anytime you want), no bargeboard restriction, and no turbocharge or supercharge restriction. Nothing. No restriction except what your mind and wind tunnel can conceive. And your driver is God. Just how fast could he do Monza? Or any other course? Spinning 25,000rpm at 2,000bhp in a 500kg car, just how fast and dangerous could it be? If all F1 restrictions were removed and money was no object, just how fast could it get? 200kph hairpin corners?

I realize that you aren't engineers, I was just curious.

  • Formula 1 versus NASCAR at Sonoma?

I'm watching the NASCAR series "road race" at Sonoma. We all know that there is nothing stock about a "stock car," but there is certainly nothing stock about F1 either. If Mercedes, Red Bull, McLaren, Lotus, and Force India were allowed to race, how would they fare at Sonoma versus the NASCAR cars? Complete blow out or a tight race?

  • F1 versus the Fast and Furious movies?

Silly question. How would a F1 racer do against the Fast and the Furious movie racers? I'm sure that the F&F drivers would be destroyed, a Nissan Skyline ricer doesn't have 6g's of downforce, a 1000 bhp engine, DRS, or specially formulated Pirelli tires. Just how bad would the loss be? I'm sorry, I'm just looking forward to the 2013 Chinese Grand Prix and I got suckered into watching this dumbass movie again. I've even forgotten which one it was. Some crap in Tokyo, I think.

Anything with a car, baby! I'm there!

  • China, the US, and DPRK?

We all know that the DPRK (North Korea) has been doing some saber rattling lately (oddly enough, this practice comes from Chile). My question is, what would the US do if the DPRK managed a launch? Would the US try to intercept it? Or let it go in order to give a reason for massive retaliation (a-la Pearl Harbor)? I guess that it would depend on the target and projected yield.

If the DPRK managed to pull off this massive feat and the US decided to NOT intercept it....and it blew up....we all know what the retaliation would be. The DPRK would be rained on by W88 MRVs. I guess that my real question is: what in the world would the PRC do? They'd have to do something.

We all know that this is merely a thought exercise, the DPRK would never launch, they just want a relaxation of sanctions through threat (international extortion). But what if it went from the theoretical to the very fcuking real?

  • Tankless Electric Water Heater?

I'm thinking about getting a tankless electric hot water heater. I've had problems with them in the past, they just don't give me the GPM at temperature that I like. I'd like about 200 degrees F at 10GPM. Is that too much to ask? I think I've found my heater:

  • Can I Plug a 5-15 NEMA Plug Into a 14-30 NEMA Receptacle?

They sure look they same...I'd just have to change one of the middle blade style sockets to common/return and keep the polarity in mind, right? Normally on a 14-30 the two blades are both live conductors, 240VAC line to line, 120VAC to ground. If I only wired up one hot 120 on one side, the return/common on the other, ignored the top slot completely, and wired ground to ground, it should plug up, right?

  • How Do You Trip a Breaker?

I have a standard 220VAC Cutler Hammer distro box in one of my apartments. The guys up there are p1ssing me off (loud music), but I need the rent money and they pay. The distro box is in a part of the house that I don't need a key to access and is impossible to observe from inside the apartment.

I need a neat, fast way other than arcing out to get the breaker to go into trip state. Can this be done? I could easily flip the breaker off, but unfortunately I've rented to loud music listening, mildly intelligent tenants (don't rent to smart people). They know the difference between off state and trip state. I want it to look like their stereo has drawn too much power and has tripped the breaker. I need this method to be fast, manual, and non-arcing, leaving the breaker in trip state, not off.

    Any ideas?

  • Why Don't People Use Oxygen Bottles on Engines?

It seems to me that oxygen is a far superior oxidizer compared to nitrous oxide. Why don't people use liquid oxygen bottles in high performance racers? I know, it's a high explosive, but handled correctly, LOX is no more dangerous than N2O. Would it turn any block into a bomb or something?

  • I'm Having a Problem Stealing a Car?

I had to evict a tenant 2 months ago but his damn derelict car is still here. It's been sitting in the same spot for 1.75 years. I want it, it has a nice 383 in it. It doesn't move unless you push it. I live in Missouri. I've already tried the DMV to get registration information on it and they won't tell me squat because of something called "DPPA" (Driver's Privacy Protection Act). Well, I circumnavigated that with a filing of a DOR-4678 form. I got my "Security Access Code" yesterday and now I'm filing out a form DOR-5017 to get online access to DMV records.

I'm about to become a very powerful force. Full access to driver's records, vehicle records, SSN numbers, etc. All for 3.8 cents per record check. Anyway, back to the story.

The car is, in all likelihood, not titled to the guy I evicted. I almost guarantee (99.999% positive) that it is still registered to the guy he bought it from (BTW, I've heard nothing from this evicted kid and he owes me about 4,000 bucks). There are about 5 ways I could handle this and I'm wondering which is best:

1). I could file and certified mail a DOR-5227 form after I find out who the titular owner is (abandoned vehicle, 30 days to respond). If the titular owner wants to come get it or takes an interest, I have no recourse, I can't stop him but to call the cops and charge criminal trespass (I don't even know who this guy is or if the certified mail will even be received, but a no delivery ticket is good enough in Missouri).

2). I could go for a lien sale (form DOR-4577 and DOR-108), notifying the titular owner and all lien holders that the vehicle is in storage and racking up charges by the hour, day, and week. There are problems with this one, the sale is actually conducted on the courthouse steps and while I'd get the money back, I want the car. I'd have to bid on the damn thing myself. The good thing is, if there were no bidders, it's mine for free. I'd be both the seller and the buyer.

    3. A combination of both DOR-5227 and DOR-4577 (the one that says the titular owner owes me 1.75 years worth of storage costs).

    4. Adverse possession. I could wait 5 more years and file a case in circuit court in 60 months for adverse possession (I don't like this one, but it's an option).

    5. Strip it down and say hooligans did it. All I really want is the 383.

Is there anything I'm leaving out? The titular owner will probably not care about certified mail concerning an abandoned car he sold years ago and the punk kid that really does own it is too stupid to get it titled correctly. I have 0 legal responsibility to try to notify him. As they say at the Chinese laundry, "No tickey, no washey." I've been told that getting a car declared abandoned is a bad idea compared to conducting a (hopefully) uncontested lien sale.

    What do you guys think?

  • Backfeed voltages on dead legs?

I had some tenants move out and 2 months after the fact I'm tired of running extension cords to the unit (which I've been told is illegal, BTW). Anyway, the electric company came out today to hook me up and refused to because of a 26.7VAC and a 22.3VAC backfeed voltage across both legs. It's an Edison split transformer and the main legs were completely disconnected. How could there possibly be a potential difference? Do I have magic wires or something? THESE MAINS WERE COMPLETELY OUT OF THE BOX. I can't emphasize that enough. They share a common run with another unit's conduit and the ground hasn't been inspected. What could be causing this spurient voltage? Give me some ideas before I give up and call an electrician. Bad meter socket? Failed ground (center tap should take care of that)? Induction? There really is nothing more I can think of, the damn mains were in my hand, dead, and still measuring voltage at the socket but not at the end of my mains. Has to be in the socket, right?

  • I'm having a problem with wireless connectivity in an Acer notebook?

I'm at my wit's end. I'm about to pay money to have this thing fixed. I have an Acer 5050-3785 Aspire notebook. I changed the operating system from Vista to XP Pro. Ever since, the wireless WLAN card hasn't worked. I've downloded every driver from here to Timbuktoo. No love. It's odd because the LAN card is a Realtek but the WLAN card is an Atheros. I can't even find the model number of the Atheros WLAN card. I've tried to set up wireless networks about 10 billion times. Nothing. What in the world am I doing wrong?

  • Is Riekes Crisa still in business?

My father used to work as a salesman for them. He's now dead, but my brother was asking me about some of the jobs he used to have and I didn't have the information. He worked for Reynold's Bindery, CCH, China Dry Goods (San Francisco), Lindsey Water Conditioning, and on and on. Any idea if Riekes Crisa is still in business?

  • How Many Airport Security Checkpoints are There in the Lower 48 States of the USA?

Exact number please, no "under construction" or "future planning." How many places in the USA can you go from "unsecured space" to "secured space" at airports in the US?

Sorry, impossible question to answer without visiting every airport in the US and actually counting them. I'm trying to help out my nephew with a report.

  • What Percentage of Questions on the Law and Ethics Board?

I've noticed that a lot (>10%) of the questions on this board are merely psychotic people with an imaginary beef and too few meds. What do you guys think the percentage is?

I must admit, some are fun to read.

  • What is Going Wrong with Linguistic Education Today?

I've been a member of the Yahoo! Answers and other online communities for some time and I've come to a disturbing conclusion. Ninety-nine percent of English speaking people don't know their own language. I could understand if English were a second language for this 99%, but it's quite obviously not. Every day this 99% butchers the English language with poor syntax, word choice, punctuation, spelling, and usage. Seriously, how long does it take to learn the difference between "there," "their," and "they're?" It's as if no one even makes an attempt anymore to be adroit and concise.

I think that I'm most upset by...well, it's a toss up. The spelling errors are inexcusable; there is a built in spell checker on almost all forums. The usage errors are simply atrocious. I saw this the other day right here on Y!A: "i aint got know criminal record." Are you kidding me? I know that "no" and "know" are homophones, but c'mon. If you can't make that distinction by the age of 5, have your parents to sign a permission slip for you to blow your brains out with daddy's gun.

This 99% can't even put together a coherent sentence, point, or argument. There is no dynamicism in anything they woefully attempt to write. "Wat shuld i nam me babie" doesn't even qualify as English and no one gives a damn anyway.

What has happened? We must define the problem first and foremost. Only then can we start looking for solutions.

  • Prednisone Allergy, You Have to be Kidding me?

I just had a friend call me and claim an allergy to prednisone. I told him that he was high on crack and PCP. Maybe LSD-25. You cannot have an allergy to prednisone, right? It has to be the binders or the proteins from the mammalian production conduit, right? How would anyone ever survive to live birth with an allergy to prednisone? For that matter, how would a fetus even develop with an allergy to prednisone?

  • ACD, SIS, SES, and PBJ?

I need some help understanding the differences:

ACD : Adjournment in contemplation of dismissal

SIS : Suspended imposition of sentence

SES : Suspended execution of sentence

    PBJ : Probation before judgment

I just need a few questions answered about these deferred sentences.

    1) Have I actually plead guilty to anything?

    2) What's on my record as a result of the above?

    3) Will records exist even though I've completed the orders for the particular DS?

    4) Should I have any existing records expunged (arrest records, for example)?

    5) Are there any other deferred sentences that you know of?

I'd simply like to know what the exact differences and advantages/disadvantages of each of these DS's are. I've never seen this fully explained and it very well could help lots of people for more reasons than just didacticism.
