What is Going Wrong with Linguistic Education Today?

I've been a member of the Yahoo! Answers and other online communities for some time and I've come to a disturbing conclusion. Ninety-nine percent of English speaking people don't know their own language. I could understand if English were a second language for this 99%, but it's quite obviously not. Every day this 99% butchers the English language with poor syntax, word choice, punctuation, spelling, and usage. Seriously, how long does it take to learn the difference between "there," "their," and "they're?" It's as if no one even makes an attempt anymore to be adroit and concise.

I think that I'm most upset by...well, it's a toss up. The spelling errors are inexcusable; there is a built in spell checker on almost all forums. The usage errors are simply atrocious. I saw this the other day right here on Y!A: "i aint got know criminal record." Are you kidding me? I know that "no" and "know" are homophones, but c'mon. If you can't make that distinction by the age of 5, have your parents to sign a permission slip for you to blow your brains out with daddy's gun.

This 99% can't even put together a coherent sentence, point, or argument. There is no dynamicism in anything they woefully attempt to write. "Wat shuld i nam me babie" doesn't even qualify as English and no one gives a damn anyway.

What has happened? We must define the problem first and foremost. Only then can we start looking for solutions.

    A couple of problems :

    1) Poor education, it is getting worse with the students testing and learning from past acheivement.

    2) Students poorly preped to learn. Due to many lack proper nutrition, a proper family to help them (mother or father missing, or financially stressed due to recession and horrible job outlook), gangs, and etc...

    3) Teachers stressed from lack stability that they will not be layed off, fired, or transferred due to shrinking school budgets.

    4) Over crowded schools size where the teacher has to many students.

    5) Poor used text books passed, they have to be as cheap and reusable as possible.

    6) Education cuts from the state and federal government. It is almost the first to get cut.

    7) Lack of property taxes to support the schools. With the foreclosure crisis there is too many missing tax payers or ones paying much less due to their house values plummeting.

    8) Texting, so the words are shortened.

    9) Tweets where the message is compacted.

    10) Pres. Bush's education reforms where the students are tought how to pass test taking, but not understand why or with practical uses.

Source(s): I do not uses a spell checker unless it for a resume or absolutely necessary. I do make a lot of typos. This site said I have 5 misspellings and can not find them. But above is just 10 reasons why we have educational problems in the U.S.. The children our a future, but that does not stop any politician. They have ignored our roads, bridges, and infrastructure. Many where designed for a life span of 40 years, and some are closer to 100 years old and they only get the minor bad aid repairs.

The poor linguistic use of today's youth is due to people becoming teachers without going to university. Teachers now days go to 'teacher training college' learning up to six subject in two years then doing three years on the job training.

To teach a subject properly you need to know the subject and to do this you need to go to university.

It takes five years to learn and understand a subject.

This rot started when I left school in 1978 when teaching assistants suddenly became teachers getting the same pay as a teacher who learnt their subject at a university.

Why? because of the fact i wanted to be a minority. Why? whilst i replaced into 15 I utilized for a job as a secretary. I interviewed and examined for the job. I typed a hundred and twenty wpm, and that i killed another applicant on the grammar and math tests. comprehend what they advised me? Sorry - we would desire to employ a hispanic guy or woman for this job and we won't employ you. I had checked "caucasian" on the utility. 2) thinking the above, think of of each and every of the mixed racial marriages there are immediately. Hispanics marrying caucasians. Blacks marrying caucasians. Asians marrying caucasians. Now - you deliver a census out and all of their infants would examine a minority status instead of immediately caucasian. that would clarify why our minority categories are transforming into at certainly one of those speedy fee. 3) My son is a million/4 asian, 3/4 caucasian. as quickly as we fill out a census, we nevertheless positioned asian :-) 4) it fairly is obtainable that throughout the time of destiny it would earnings my son to evaluate "caucasian" LOL! All of this reported, i'm happy that our us of a is transforming into an excellent broader melting pot. i admire that there are a great number of mixed marriages. i think of it fairly is stable, wholesome, and the main suitable way i comprehend a thank you to eliminate racism. in spite of the indisputable fact that, i'm certainly worried that we are going to easily create yet another minority (caucasians). i'm worried that folk nevertheless look at skin colour whilst hiring for jobs, figuring out on buddies, making judgement. whilst the day comes that there is not any place to evaluate on a sort in any respect, i visit be happy.
