The British Navy mutinied in various ships of the line, and at various places Yarmouth Roads and of course Spithead A well known name commanded one of the ships a certain Captain Bligh of the Bounty fame

There were some in England who might have seen it coming Admiral Lord Howe had lamented the crumbling of discipline on his own flagship In 1795 an officer handed First Lord of the Admiralty Earl Spencer a memorandum on sailor`s grievances , that raised the possibility of mutiny among the fleet

The low rate of an A.B`s pay had become a dangerous source of shipboard discontent

    So the main reasons were

    Low Pay

ILL Treatment (Harsh disipline and Harsher Punishment )

    Bad Food ,and inadequate Rations

    Press Gangs

The underlying cause was low pay The rates of pay for Petty officers and the lowere ranks in the British Navy had not risen in more than a 100 yrs , and payments wereseldom delivered on schedule

The Army`s pay pay scales had improved , and the sailors expected a similar benefit

Another source of discontent was some of the ships Captains , some ruled with a rod of iron and the men demanded their removal from command The crew of the La Nymphe, charged excessive use of the lash ,citing the case of a man double flogged for showing silent contempt , he had smiled at the first blows across his chest Men of the Glory and the Duke called for the dismissal of the officers because of cruel treatment . The Ramillies surgeon maltreated his patients and the Midshipmen were of a cruel and vindictive disposition

Neglect and poor treatment was another cause of unrest

Most of the fleets demands were met The Admiralty had little choice as just across the Channel the French Fleet was gathering

Edit For the sake of interest , Salted Pork was part of the ships provisions and was transfered from ship to ship

So if a ship sailed a three year voyage then returned to it``s home port , the salted pork could and would be transfered to another ship Some of this pork became so hard and black the men would carve it into objects
