Is it safe to work as a radiologist?

I've been recently thinking about a possible career in radiology but I was wondering if there are any health risks in working as a radiologist. Does being exposed to minimal amounts of radiation have any effect on you health?

Cattales is quite correct it's quite safe all the radiology staff wear small film badges, these pick up any stray radiation and when the films are developed they can easily measure the dosage they have received which is very carefully monitored.

Also when you work in an X-ray department lead aprons and other lead lined covers are used wherever possible, if you notice most of the time that the radiation is switched 'on', all the staff are safely behind the glass screen which is as you might expect lead glass, if the radiologist has to be near the patient when the x-rays are 'on' he wears a lead apron which covers everything from his neck to his knees.

He usually wears glasses, you've guessed it, lead glass again!

And last but not least, the walls of the department are lead lined to prevent stray radiation being picked up by passers by.

So as you can see, there is a definite 'overkill' with the use of lead and other measures.

It's safe. Usually they are exposed to it very little, people with major health issues are exposed to more in a few months than they are in their whole carreers.
