Why the term "anchor baby"?
I keep hearing US children of immigrant parents called anchor babies, why? Since the child can do nothing to help the parent's immigrant status until they are able to file at age 21, and then the parents must wait for a visa to be available, often another 20 years how is this benefiting the parent? What is the anchor part, if illegal the parents and any other family are still deported. I understand how it may help the child as an adult, just not why people say anchor baby, since they don't anchor anything.
I don't want a bunch of stupid stuff about welfare and your taxes,or how you hate all illegals, or Mexicans, disagree with the 14th amendment, etc. I want to understand the term "anchor" as used here, nothing more.

It's just emotive rhetoric.

Okay how about Jackpot baby. Once a illegal has a baby on the tax payers dime, they hit the jackpot by first having the tax payer pay for the birth of the baby, at no cost to the illegal. Then the social services department signs up the baby for food stamps, WICK, and free medical care. So that's the second jackpot. When the kids start school they get free breakfasts and lunches. Then if the child goes to college or trade school, because the parents get paid under the table they get a good share of the financial aid. I know they are USA citizens but their mothers are not and should not be in the country. Then lets not forget the emotional staging that takes place when the illegals are caught and claim they can not go back because of their children would be left behind. Now that's both a anchor baby and jackpot baby Elvira Arellano got deported because she was caught in a federal sting at a airport using a stolen SSN. Now if she had been caught in say a restaurant, she might have been able to stay using her son as anchor

i see people say that illegals use there kids for their benefit. tell me where that is going on because i have never seen that. anyways as for the anchor baby part Karen i have never seen any illegal parent actually get citizenship because of their kids. i have seen many cases where the parents get deported and the kids end up having to go back home.

You are wrong.
What you have described is how the law is supposed to work.
However, they go to an immigration hearing and cry and moan about how they have all of these children in the US, and they should be granted a stay of deportation based on hardship. Sometimes it works. It depends on the Immigration judge.
Even when it doesn't work, it is still a tool in the arsenal that the illegal aliens use to circumvent our system of laws that they show little regard for. Also, many believe that it will raise their playing hand when the issue of amnesty comes up for debate in the US again. Personally, I find it even more insulting that one would have a child here that they would raise on the backs of our taxpayers....and then demand special status because of it. It permanently dispels the myth of "migrant worker"
Source(s): By the way Karen, I did live in Mexico for two months, and yes I did have to pay bribes. I did get things stolen from me, and watched the police do nothing. I also knew two tourists who were arrested for fighting who were let out of the police wagon after paying 100 bucks. There was also a gunbattle between the Federal police and the local police in Chihuahua. When I was there, an entire prison in Zacatecas escaped. So please, don't compare it to the US. I know the truth, despite what you pretend the truth is. - How do you think about the answers? You can sign in to vote the answer.

think of an anchor as a human shield. the illegals put the child in front of them when they want freebies, or when they are caught (captured) usually a judge will release them for humanitarian reasons. illegals know this that's the biggest reason they are breeding like they do

i really do not understand it either. i feel it is just more rhetoric to spread hate and make these kids seem illegitimate citizens when they have no control over where they are born just like the rest of us. if you are born on US soil you are a citizen period.
having a child here does not anchor an illegal immigrant to this country, and those who think this obviously have not heard of the countless stories of children being separated from their parents because of deportation.
they are no different from any other child who was born here, and are legally entitled to what ever government benefits they may need because they are citizens. so people need to stop complaining about free education and etc, because it is perfectly legal.

Well you said you don't want to hear about welfare so I can't really answer your question.
