What is the best kind of cardio for weight loss?
My father (a former all around athlete) chides me for my preference for the elliptical machine as opposed to running on a treadmill. He says that the ONLY way I will ever lose weight (I'm aiming for 20-30 lbs) is to run. The problem is, I HATE running. I have flat feet and even with my arch supports, I can't go very fast, or very far, without growing tired easily. I happen to think that the best kind of cardio to lose weight is the kind you can stick with, but maybe I'm missing something?
Any advice is most welcome.

No you are correct. If you don’t like it you won’t do it. A lot of people think that the treadmill is the be all end all but that is incorrect. There are a lot of common mistakes that can be made while running on the treadmill and people tend to cheat on it if they are not enjoying themselves. That said there are also mistakes that are made using the elliptical machine (leaning forward, using arms to much etc.). The best workout you can do is diversifying. Try switching machines once and awhile. If you are uncomfortable with this and only feel comfortable with the elliptical machine than make sure you play around with the controls and tensions. Work out on intervals and not a set level the entire time. The best advice is to keep with it. Always remember doing something is better than nothing and there is no such thing as wasting you time. Results will be different for everyone.

I totally agree with you.
As long as you are regularly doing physical activity(s) you enjoy, you can't go wrong.
I'm also not a fan of jogging on a treadmill, because I find it boring & the repetitive pounding is hard on my knee & ankle.
Instead I currently enjoy doing active transport (walking & cycling) and hiking.
Exercise is a long-term healthy life-style choice, so it needs to be something you can stick with.
If your current workout starts to get boring, then mix it up by changing the intensity or by doing other activities.

No disrespect, but pops is trippin
YOU are absolutely right, The best kind you will stick with.
If your heart rate is elevated above 120, your good. WHATEVER the activity is. Now, you have to be careful in not letting your heart rate get TOO high because then your body will burn glucose, not fat. And if your diet happens to be low in carbs (which turns to glucose after digestion), then your body will burn your muscles for glucose. This is why running, as your father suggests, can actually be detrimental to your body composition.

I find when I use the elliptical machine its easy to slack, it can be effective if you really push yourself and increase resistance, but its easy to just move slowly and not work too hard on it. Have you tried taking classes? Many can really boost your heart rate and burn big calories. I'm also a fan of the biggest loser workout dvds.. the trainers know how to burn the most calories with the exercises they have you do, and the contestants replace the people in normal workout videos that have perfect bodies and can do all the exercises perfectly, which to me is almost unmotivating. hope this helps!! and good luck!!

RUNNING only. Your dad is 100% correct. Wear arch supporters in all shoes you ever wear and your flat feet will improve over time. For now, try to run with the front part of your feet, without landing on heels. It's kind of hard, but you'll get used to it.
If you get tired easily, that's from not having enough training. Keep on running and you'll get much better. Dont forget to eat really healthily.
