I am a stay at home mom and my baby currently won't take a bottle but I pump and store it in the freezer hoping that he will take a bottle soon. Anyway...I just have a manual pump so his first feeding of the day, he will eat on one side and I will pump the other side at the same time. (I found that is the easiest and quickest way to get the most milk) I easily get 4 oz. I stop with that even though I could get more.

Just a little FYI, the avg. woman can only pump 1-3 oz. total off of both breasts combined.

So, if someone you know can pump 5 oz., that doesn't mean they are better than you or that they the norm.

Some women literally don't respond to the pump and can't pump anything at all

But then have tons of milk when baby eats

Also, do not look at what you pump and assume your baby isnt' getting enough

The electric pump simply can't mimic the movements that a baby nursing can

I could pump way more than average but I have oversupply which actually can be bad since babies can sometimes not gain enough weight due to this

I would pump every 2-3 hours. For about 10-15 minutes. But you have to keep doing it if not it gets hard to get any milk. The more you pump the better. I would get like 1-2 oz. It depends.

The more ya pump the more ya get!

everyday you pump the next day at that time the supply will be there!

    but It does take time,

I breastfeed exclusively and am A stay at home mom so I'm with my baby pretty much all the time,

But for those times that daddy or grandma babysits or whatever I pump every morning ( thats when your breasts are most full) after she nurses and then store it in the freezer till its needed.

But working moms pump every 2-3 hours to keep up there supply,

if you need to pump more frequently try doing so a little after each time your baby nurses.

at first you get very little

now after my baby nurses in the morning I pump for 5 minutes or so and get 2-3 ounces

it depended on how long i would wait to pump honestly. If i would go through the night like 8 hours, i could pump i medela bottle and a half which is 6 ounces. If i pump like every 4 to 5 hours i would get 4 ounces normally or less. My baby was in the NICU is why i pumped and i would put my milk in one of those drug testing cups like what you pee in that they gave me and on a good day i would bring in 13 of those cups (filled to the top) and the nurses would be tripping out. I had an electric double breasted pump like what u rent from the hospital.

i only work 2 days a week, so those days i pump about 3-4 times throughout the day. i have ONLY EVER gotten 4 oz when i pump, even though i know my son gets much more when he eats from me. i was so frustrated with this and was scared my son was only getting 4 oz, but after speaking with a lactation consultant, she explained we can't measure how much our babies are getting by the amount we pump out since babies suck differently and are able to get more milk out than pumping. my baby is 7 months old.
