Virus help / desktop icons do not work.?

My norton popped up with a virus warning, all **** broke loose in firefox, then norton popped up saying SONAR fixed everything. Then restarted my computer.

When i logged back in all the desktop shortcuts with the location of "C:\Users\Public\Desktop" No longer work or have their original icons, or any icons for that matter. All the shortcuts with the location of "C:\Users\"Me"\Desktop" are still working.

While i was trying to figure this out i noticed that the public folder was set as hidden, and read only. I don't know if it was supposed to be like that, so I unchecked those two options.

To clarify, I do not get missing shortcut message. I get the "open with" dialog box. And the message "Chose the program you want to use to open this file: File: Firefox.exe"

Update:

** I just tried to open AIM from its actual location. Same problem.

Update 2:

***UPDATE*****

Solved it myself. For anyone who encounters this problem in the future:

1) Download Malwarebytes (free version)

2) save it to desktop as iexplorer.exe

3)install it and run a full virus scan. (it took me 2hrs 45 minutes. But it was worth it)

It sorta sounds like your explorer.exe is broken... Last time I had that I just did a factory reset to restore things.
