Why did my boyfriend and I both dream of me drowning him?
In both dreams he was in the water near the dock and I was in a small boat using an oar to keep him from climbing into the boat. In his dream, I just kept pushing him away. In my dream, I kept bashing him in the head with it. We had these dreams the same night and it is rare for either of us to remember dreams.
I have been living with my boyfriend for about 2 years. We argue often but never physically fight. He has a drinking problem which he is working on. We do live within yards of the harbor and have a couple boats but the boat in the dream wasn't one of ours. It was a rowboat or maybe a small aluminum skiff. There was also a short length of rope which I did not use. When we woke up we were both upset in a scared kind of way but neither of us was angry.
I don't usually put much stock in dreams but it just seems like there must have been something floating in both our minds to have such similar dreams.

To dream that you are drowning, indicates that you are feeling overwhelmed by emotions or repressed issues that are coming back to haunt you. You may be proceeding too quickly in trying to discover your unconscious thoughts. You should proceed more cautiously and slowly. If you drown to death, then is refers to an emotional rebirth. If your survive the drowning, then a waking relationship or situation will ultimately survive the turmoil.
To see someone drowning in your dream, suggests that you are becoming too deeply involved in something that is beyond your control. Alternatively, it represents a sense of loss in your own identity. You are unable to differentiate who you are anymore.
To dream that you rescue someone from drowning, indicates that you have successfully acknowledged certain emotions and characteristics that is symbolized by the drowning victim.
you might be overwhelmed by his drinking problem and not being able to control it.

Water is the symbol of emotions. Drowning is being overwhelmed by emotions. Pushing him away would indicate that you may be distancing yourself from him emotionally. Hitting him with oar is expressing anger and frustration that is tucked away in your subconscious.
He is standing in the water by the dock, and you are in the boat. It looks like he is waiting for you do decide something.

The water represents trouble. Him being in the water is him being in trouble. The trouble is probably his alcohol problem. In his dream, you are pushing him away. He may feel as if you are trying to avoid his problem. Maybe he feels you are not being very supportive of him. To you, his problem frustrates you and you are trying to strike out at him. You are angry at him for his drinking but you don't admit it, causing you frustrations.
There may be other problems in your relationship, other than his drinking, but his drinking is what seems to be the problem that you are both using as a major excuse.
You two need to talk things out, let each other know how you feel about everything. In order for you to bond and make things work out, you will have to be more open to each other. Communicate with each other.
