I just bought a nice battery charger from Radio Shack, but what's the difference between charging/discharging?

I feel stupid asking this question, but I won't know unless I ask. The charger has a chart for times to charge and discharge different size batteries, but it doesn't give the definition of charging and discharging. I know why I want to "charge" a battery, but why would I want to discharge a battery?

charging replenishes electrons to the battery.

discharging removes the stored electrons in the battery.

Discharging is used to help cycle the battery and is a nice feature.

When energy flows out of a battery, like when you use the battery to run a device, it is discharging. When energy flows into the battery, that's called charging.
