Is it ever acceptable to not leave a tip at a restaurant?

A couple weeks ago I went out with my friends to a restaurant, and our waitress basically ignored our table the entire time. I would try to catch her attention when we needed something or to remind her that she still hadn't brought my friend's soda, and she would turn the other way and duck into the kitchen. I thought she was just inattentive or clueless, but near the end of the meal she came over to our table and TOLD us that's she's been ignoring our table because she didn't feel like walking all the way across the restaurant to serve us. She wasn't apologetic.

So, my friends I didn't leave a tip. First time any of us had done it. I usually tip 15-20% of the total bill, but this time the service was so appalling. Do you think we were in the right, or should we have left SOMETHING as a tip, even if it was a just dollar? I mean, is it ever acceptable, even if you've had the WORST service, to not leave a tip at a restaurant?

I'm really REALLY forgiving of servers when I go out to eat because I know servers and I've worked in a restaurant. I will almost always tip even if they are slow, mess up the order, or forget things because I figure anyone can have a bad night, right? Even still there is one time I did not tip because I literally did not tip because we couldn't get service. We got out drinks and meals, and then the waitress never showed up again. We sat for over an hour waiting for a check (we were going to order desert, but after a while I just wanted to leave) and we couldn't get anyone's attention. So finally we paid with the manager and left. No tip. I'm not even sure the waitress was still there because I didn't even see her.

In your situation I would not have tipped either.

I am a server, and that was totally unacceptable. I would of went straight to the manager, and would not of left a tip. I can't believe she actually told you that she was deliberately ignoring your table. If I was ever to speak like that to a customer I would be fired on the spot. She obviously lacks people skills and doesn't need to be working with the public. You were 100% right.

I am a server, and I was going to say "leave at least 10% for bad service" but your details are ridiculous. I would have left nothing AND told the manager.

With the economy the way it is (my income is cut in half) that girl should be grateful to have a job and be busting her booty to make the most in a shift. What an idiot. How sad.

I would say it is totally acceptable to not tip in some cases. I know that servers sometimes rely on tips and sometimes they have to be split with the hostesses and such, but a tip is given in response for good service and to show the server that they did a good job. If they didn't, they don't deserve it. My husband and I have actually left a server a 2 cent tip. We were at a pizza place and they brought out pizza to tables that came in way after us. It turns out that she forgot to put our order in. My husband went back into the restaurant to go to the bathroom and she was cleaning up our table, he told her to not spend it all in one place.

easily its ok. I got here upon a pile of pennies that have been cut back in 0.5 with something (wirecutter? undecided the place an area youngster could get one). Ever provided that i take advantage of them to 'tip' for piss destructive provider. As for the 'stealing' reported, they're good to a element. the government assumes they make x quantity in information and taxes them for it, no count if or no longer they actually made the calculated quantity in information. however the way I see it, i'm no longer a stingy man or woman or an excessively severe one, so if i think of its undesirable provider, i'm ninety 9% particular that any one else could agree the provider replaced into undesirable. donning via with this assumption, if my server extremely gave destructive sufficient provider that i did no longer tip him he's possibly no longer likely to be serving plenty longer and usual what I 'stole' wont count. even inspite of the undeniable fact that, a sturdy chum is a perfectionist (she used to serve for 20 yrs) and each little issue bothers her. provided that she is familiar with she's choosy, she she information 7% for what she considers backside of the barrel provider. So be user-friendly with your self. once you're nitpicky, then detect a base quantity. once you're a sturdy choose, then pass with your gut.

There is no way she deserves a tip; waitresses can be fired for behaving like that. I would even leave a ten cent tip just to make the hint less subtle, but don't do that if you plan on eating there again b/c you'll get worse service/tampered food.

I would have asked to speak to her manager. If it is a chain restaurant, I would write a letter to their headquarters. I did that once for the Red Lobster when the waiter refused to serve me (I just left). I got an apologetic response.
