scared to drive on the freeway! please help :(?
i am so scared to drive on the freeway! When i was like 15 (im 19 now) i was in a bad accident, i was a passanger not the driver and it wasnt even on a freeway it was on a back road. so i dont know if that is why. but even when i first got my license i was fine on the freeway it wasn't my favorite thing but i could do it. One day i was on my way home from dropping my step daughter off at daycare and it was raining really bad to where you could hardly see in front of you, and all of a sudden there was a car stalled in the right lane with no lights or anything on and i had to swirve out of the way right infront of a semi to avoid hiting htem. than another time i was driving and this idiot tried coming in my lane right next to me and i kind of had to swirve out of the way nothing huge though. but it scared the crap out of me and ever sense than i am scared to even go one exit. its not the speed tha bothers me it is the other cars. i have this huge fear that if i am driving past a car that they are gonnna cut me off, or hit there breaks or something. It really sucks because i cant hardly go anywhere, and my fiance gets so mad that he has to drive everywhere he tells me just to get over it but i cant! the scariest part to me though is the merging like when you are getting on the freeway im scared there wont be room for me like expecially if a semi is right next to me and my fiance just says push them out of your way but i dont know how to do that. or when other cars are merging on, i am scared that i am gonna be in the right lane and they will cut me off or hit me trying to get on, or if i am in the middle or left lane that other cars will try to get out of there way and cut me off. i dont know it sounds stupid but it really does scare me. is there anything i can do to get over my fear. i thought maybe taking a defensive driving class or something might help? please give me suggestions :) oh at night and when its raining is the worst!!!!! its like im driving with a blind fold on its horrible i dont know how anyone can drive on the freeway in the rain :(

I have driven on a lot of highways in the last forty years. I have been driving large trucks most of the time and I know how you feel.
I have made a habit of using roads that are less crowded and find that is less stressful. I cheat a little I try to stay out in the Rockies and we have some very peaceful highways. But please don't try to push a truck out of your way it doesn't work! If you were ever to get up in one you would see that a car alongside a truck is almost invisible on the right side. So the truck will maybe feel a little bump but will not really be too badly affected. The truck may have someone on the other side that has as much right to the road as you. So if forced to choose who he squishes the Bozo on the ramp is the logical choice. So stop and wait for a break in the traffic then get on the road, that is a polite thing to do. The folks behind you might be mad but it ain't their turn, so nanana-booboo.
The principle of entrance ramps is that you are the new guy and you are asking the traffic to let you in so don't demand respect, show it. I try to drive with respect for all the other people on the road if they are on foot or horseback. If you treat others with respect you will get it back.
I used to say they built the interstate system to get the amateurs out of my way now I say they made it to keep the "Professionals" out of my way. I logged many of the miles that I have traveled on two lane roads, the funny thing is you can sometimes make better progress off the freeways. Example, start driving in Glendive Montana and go west you see the same trucks pass you repeatedly even if you drive off the superslab. The next day you see the same people pass you again west of Missoula. Now you don't get going very quickly with a big truck and if you stop in little towns you would think you would not make any progress. Wrongo! the same trucks are still there the next day. Sometimes I would even be unloaded in Seattle and going back when they are on the way in to town. There are alot of inexperienced truck drivers on the road and it is best to avoid them.
Turtle and Hare, you just keep truckin along and you will get there. Do not let anyone force you to drive where you are uncomfortable, the stress will make you nutty. I freak out when ever I get east of Bismark ND nowdays. But I know a lot of ways to get around the clowns on the slab there too, so follow the path with heart; that's the quiet roads with nice folks; and you will keep yours ticking a lot longer.

The reply turns out functional, however I understand it would possibly not be for you in the beginning. Practice! I can appreciate how riding on freeways can also be nerve-wracking, notably by way of tremendous towns, however to be able to substitute your worry with trust you can have to simply preserve working towards till you believe relaxed. Eventually it'll give up being this type of tremendous deal, however meanwhile you simply have to get ou there and do it. Try going at it throughout the night time while there are much less automobiles at the avenue. That manner you get a larger believe for the highway with much less to fear approximately. When you believe relaxed with the highway itself, the opposite drivers might be much less of a difficulty for you. DON'T be an competitive driving force. They are idiots. You wish to be a CONFIDENT driving force. Yes, be thoughtful of others at the avenue, however do not take crap from them both. If you have to difference lanes or merge, watch out however DO IT, lol. When you notice that hole within the subsequent lane, get into it. Most drivers at the avenue at the moment relatively do not care approximately different drivers. They will purposely block you for no rationale, even though your lane is finishing, they usually relatively do not love to be handed. Those competitive, mindless drivers are those that you simply see pulled over via the law enforcement officials, wrecked, or in a frame-bag. Be constructive in your self (train makes ultimate) and you can do first-rate.

Don't be scared my friend. If you are even marginally successful in driving on normal street roads thern you can drive on highways and freeways. But i do understand your fear its the same with me and the deep section of swimming pools. Think about it this way, in a highway, all the cars near you are going the same direction as you with roughly the same speed. In 2007 only .54 people were killed in freeways, out of every 100 million people! A reason people are scared of highways is because you can't just leave it without an exit. I suggest next time you go on one, find a not so crowded one and drive slowly to search for exit, then comeback again to get confident. Good Luck!!!

This is my suggestion. Try to find a stretch of highway that is not busy at a time it won't be and just drive on it for a while and merge and change lanes. I am not a counselor or anything but I am assuming to be not scared of it you have to face the fear and the only way to get on the road and drive. Try to enjoy it.
