    Just force of habit I guess. Like when you give someone a lethal injection, you swab their arm with alcohol to sterilise it.

    Because if the oxygen levels got low or something and temporarily passed out then they wouldn't go bouncing around in their planes and bomb the wrong place... duh. Just because they're gonna die anyways doesn't mean they don't have a purpose.
