Is it possible to continue menstruating if not ovulating?

I have long cycles and am still menstruating but not convinced that I am ovulating but thought that menstruation wouldn't happen if there was no ovulation.

Especially with a long cycle this can happen. When you ovulate and the egg is not fertilized, the body produces hormones that essentially liquidize the uterine lining, this is what results in you menstruating. If, however, you don't ovulate, the lining will keep building up and getting thicker and thicker. After a while, the inside of it will slough off. Some women call this menstruation, some don't, from the outside it's basically the same.

Menstruation does occur without ovulation. The purpose of birth control pills is to "trick" the body into thinking it's pregnant, thereby preventing ovulation. But most birth control pills are designed so that a woman still gets her period once a month.

So to answer your question, it is possible to menstruate without ovulation. To know for certain if you are ovulating you can go to your local pharmacy and purchase a test that will determine if you are or are not.

Menstruation will continue with or without ovulation. Menstruation happens because of the effects hormones have on the uterus. This is controlled by the hypothalamus, and has nothing to do with your ovaries.
