Is it normal for a Voltage Gauge to read around 16.5 V on an '02 Silverado?
This seems a little high compared to the 13.9V I'm used to on my older vehicles. Would electronic ignition/timing have something to do with the higher voltage or is there another problem I should look in to? Thanks for your help.

thats a little high i think could be your voltage regulator in the alternator

Most newer vehicles use a higher voltage due to the amount of electronics installed in the vehicle. The alternator puts out a higher voltage not only 2 charge the battery but also run everything else electronic inside and outside the vehicle. hope this helps

For accuracy - test at the battery terminals, with a digital tester - engine running - all accessories ON. Should be 13.8 to 14.5.v
More? Could be a defective battery and/or alternator?

Thats to high could be the regulator is going bad or the battery is getting bad making it charge harder. My 07 is only running 14.0-14.5 and my wifes Envoy 06 is 14.0-14.5 so it sound high to me.

It is high. Have your alternator checked. Should be around 14 volts.

yes, in order to charge a 12v battery the charging system must put more than 12v into it.
