Keyboard typing incorrect characters?

I work in an centre that has around 20 PCs for use by the public. We are currently running Office 2000 on Windows XP. On several of the computers (5 or 6 I think) we have started having issues where the keyboard is typing incorrect characters in Word.

For example, if someone types CATS its coming out j]d£p or something similar. The strange thing is that if we close Word, and re-open it, the keyboard types normally again.

All virus checking has been done and all language settings are correct. We haven't been able to get anyone technical to look at it because the problem doesn't happen consistently, it just suddenly appears.

We are going on a part presumption that the comps are just getting too old, and the software is giving out (We are upgrading computers and software in April) But it would be nice to know what exactly is happening so that we can inform the people its happening to.

Any help would be appreciated. Many thanks.

Are you using ZoneAlarm Extreme Security this has caused a number of similar problems

If you are solve by turning off ZAE's anti-KeyLogger function under Browser Security > ForceField > Settings > Advanced and turning off the "Block programs that secretly record your keystrokes".

Your computers are ten years old now, and so the software will, of course, wear out. You're probably lucky they've lasted this long, but now it is time to get an upgrade. Luckily, you're getting one soon, so it's not really a problem.

Your software is 10 years old now. And software does wear out, a known fact. Even viruses wear out and disintergrate, but most people haven't time to wait for this to happen.

And in its current state your softeware is unreliable and you won't be able to do some serious work as such.

Time for a total upgrade now, whether you want to or not, you can't escape the fact and you know it.

Plain and simple truth is alwaya best, and for the people involved to be patient and wait until the upgrades take place.

Uninstall the drivers, shut down, unplug the keyboard, reboot. Shutdown again, plug the keyboard back in, then reboot. Windows will then reinstall the drivers. If you have a wireless keyboard, unplug the receiver, then reinstall the USB controller drivers.

Sounds like you have a virus or trojan that your anti-virus isn't picking up.

the best way to cure it is to reinstall one of the pc's and see if the problem disappears

This problem isn't caused by pc's or software getting old.
