What is the thin, black, foamy thing on skis that is positioned in front of the toe of the bindings?

This is not a common part of a ski or binding. It could be foam used by Slalom racers so the gates do not ruin their skis when they race and the gates hit their skis, but besides that I would have no clue. It could also be just some extra foam on the skis that the shop may have put on so they do not get scratched.
