MMA 1000 years ago (opinion)?
If we took the modern MMA (BJJ/muay thai combo) and put it in asia 1000 years ago would it do as well as it does now? what about krav maga? what about any other military or modern fighting system. how do you think the style would adapt if it was placed in that time period? and if you went back 1000 years with no guns, what style would you want to learn and why?
Alex: but they (traditional martial arts) believed weapons to be an extension of the body. so when training weapons they would have also trained empty hand through principles.

what many of you people seem to not realize is the top athletes of today nothing compared to the athletes of the past, the past athletes were much more skilled,
as for combat, they didint fight for trophy or medial they fort to the death, its a complete diffrent mind set then what mma fights for,
you dont even have to go back 1000's years for that mentality, the early 1900's was the same in parts of asia, when you struck a person you only had to strike them once, or twice, mma fighters dont train to kill a person in one or two strikes, they train for compaction. in fact few styles to teach ikken hitsu principal (once punch death blows), like they did back in the early 1900's.

A thousand years ago, well maybe 500, martial art systems were what you would might call MMA. They had to encompass all aspects of fighting and many that today's MMA schools don't. Back then it wasn't fighting for sport, it was fighting for your life or the very existence of your family "clan". MMA isn't really new the fact is that after the invention of modern warfare "gun" martial arts were changed to arts of self improvement over fighting. Modern weapons changed martial arts forever in the way that most styles are missing whole aspects of fighting or are rather ineffective for real combat. Most modern MMA would get destroyed in this past time period. I mean, who practices for warfare on horseback or fighting with dozens if not thousands of soldiers armed with weapons. The training has to fit the situation, right? What would I like to learn if lived back then would be how to make a rifle...

Modern MMA has no philosophy or redeeming values other than "win the fight for the money or trophy" there is no honor there. It does not prove that their fighting system is better than the other because there are rules set in place for safety and to set up "exciting" fights.
I would go back to the old Chinese styles that focused on internal arts where fighting wasn't the #1 option. I want to learn the healing properties of acupuncture and other "lost" arts and how to make the cup of perfect tea and calligraphy...

Aha we are nothing to the grandmasters of 1000 years ago because even though we have worked on martial arts and improved them we have also lost a lot of the old ways in doing this, and i thank my teacher for making sure the old ways lived and passing them on to me because if we went back without the old ways we would surly die; back then killing as a common thing fights were to the death. I am very grateful to have been chosen by my teacher to learn Muay Boran which is what Muay Thai derives from, but is much more "brutal" to say the least, and can make almost all off today's Martial Arts seem like nothing.
I thank you for this question it has given me time to reflect on my Muay Bran, so again thank you.

Most "modern" systems won't really do well in the middle ages because they were created for a totally different culture and mind-set.
Perceptions concerning violence, death and killing were way different from ours - somebody getting killed in a fight was a much more probable outcome back then than it is today, and is often the only possible/acceptable outcome. You are also more likely to face opponents wielding weapons that we are very unfamiliar with today - such as axes, halberds, bow-and-arrow and spears. Finally, most "fights" involve a lot of people, both on your side and on the opposing side. Remember: clan and tribal wars were much more commonplace in ancient Asia.

In unarmed combat, I think a modern mma fighter would dominate any opponent in eleventh century Asia. Back the people who trained in martial arts focused most of their time on weapons training. An early samurai, Chinese soldier or Mongol warrior would have had some skill in hand-to-hand combat, but they were training for war, where weapons and armor are everything. They didn't have the luxury of training full-time in unarmed combat for sport.

Hmm.. it depends. If they're just dating for sexual crap or because everyone else is dating, it's stupid. But if they're actually mature and truly WANT to get to know the person and be with them, that's fine. But I honestly don't think 14-15 year old guys are mature enough or ready for a good relationship. Some of them are. I was 14, almost 15 when I went out with my first boyfriend and he was 16. This doesn't make me a ho, I was just more mature than guys my age and I actually LIKED the guy I dated and wanted to get to know him.

Pancration back in the day was basically MMA with limited striking depending on the rule set.
