Do you find it arrogant how canada made their olympic slogan "own the podium"?

Update:

I think its arrogant because Canada went into the olympics expecting that. Yes, the US supports its athletes and hopes they will win, but we don't create a slogan essentially saying they we will be the best, which is kind of how I view the Canadians slogan to be. The Olympics are meant as ways of friendly competition and international comradary, not stating before and during the olympics to "own the podium"

Own the podium is NOT an Olympc slogan. It is a program that strives to place Canadians on the podium at international events. It's not even directed directly at the Olympics, but at all competitions, although of course the Olympics in Vancouver were the biggest target.

What do you find arrogant about a sporting nation saying 'we want to win'? I am very confused by that attitude. Would you prefer that Canada says "4th is good enough"? What kind of a nonsensical statement would that be?

No... it's not a problem. It's not like, we were arrogant about any of it. The reason we were so hyped up on winning a gold medal is because we've never done it on home soil... until now.

The government started this "Own the Podium" Campaign to finally win a gold and to make Canada "Believe" (another one of our campaigns) and to give us the power to achieve our goals. Why is it arrogant?

Our slogan was with glowing hearts... it wasn't Own the Podium... and it didn't concern any other nations besides our own. Canadians aren't arrogant. We are one of the friendlist nations in the world.

So... sure, you can critisize us as much as you want but... you are probably just mad that even though The States won the most medals... we set a gold medal record on home soil AND we beat both of your hockey teams. There's no need to be jealous and blame us for being arrogant... because as a whole, we aren't.

I mean... really? We just opened our arms to a whole bunch of people from different countries and we didn't do it like it was a bother... we did it with open arms just like we do with almost everything we do.

I'm not sure where you got the idea that the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games slogan was "Own the Podium" but its not. It was "With Glowing Hearts". If you don't believe me, just type Vancouver 2010 slogan into Google.

    Hope this helps, XD!

I never heard that be our 'slogan'!

I heard our slogan was Believe...

I heard them say Own the Podium a few times.

But you know what, the Olympics were in our country this year and I'm very proud that we stood out and broke records and won a ton!

Just like in 2014, I fully expect the Russians to dominate.

It was not a slogan, it was a program like you have. Canada does not expect to walk away winning everything, its a program to give our athletes confidence, positive reinforcement to know the country backs them and will allow funding to provide them with the essentials to live while allowing training to be available to them.

I've read a lot of reviews over the past 2 weeks and they didnt say Canadians were being unfriendly and arrogant to the other countries, in fact, we LOVE having them here.

Downtown Vancouver over the 2010 Olympics had incredible energy, and all walks of life were enjoying the festivities with smiles on their faces. I saw it, people with Russian uniforms on, to police officers. It was also a great way to show our Eastern neighbours what the west is like. And our Southern neighbours that we welcome them here anytime. It really brought people together, not apart.

I'm a Canadian. I thought it was a little presumptuous and placing unfair pressure on our athletes.

I understand why they did it. They needed to justify the incredibly amounts of money poured into olympic athletes and it's catchier than "Hopefully get some athletes to place". And every country wants their athletes to perform their best and bring home a medal.

    So. I'm waffling.

"Own the podium" is an objective, not a slogan. It's not arrogant for Canada to want our Olympic athletes to excel. Don't Americans want their athletes to win a lot of Olympic medals? Well, so do we. We support our athletes and we're proud of them. That's not the same as arrogance in my opinion.

No, Canada decided to invest money into a program that was aimed at putting more of their athletes on the podium (Mostly the Gold podium) and by naming it "Own the podium" it shows that Canada is not a pushover country as many think it is. This was also evident in the Opening and Closing cerimonies.

I do not think that program was their slogan for the games overall, it was for their own athletes. I do not find it arrogant, it was designed to give the Canadians a feeling of pride.

On the plus side it gave Canada its best showing for a host country winter games, and Canada's best showing period.

On the down side it made Canadians have very high expectations and then feel let down at the beginning when they were not raking in the medals.

    Canada did great overall.
