What is the minimum age you can consume alcohol on a cruise ship sailing in Europe?

Are all lines different with this policy, or is there a common rule? I'll be 18 when I plan to cruise next year in the Mediteranean. Also, if this makes a difference, I'll be traveling with my grandmother and not may parents. Thanks.

Some cruise ships let you drink alcohol at 18 years old with a parent's permission. But that would be beer and wine only. So, bottom line is a parent has to approve and not all ships allow this. You would have to read the rules page for your cruise. This is ONLY true of European cruises.

With some cruise companies, passengers between ages 18 and 21 may drink alcohol on board ships, but only under certain conditions: the cruise departs a port in Europe or South America, the parent or legal guardian signs a special permission form at the time of departure, the parent or legal guardian is ON THE CRUISE with the minor child, and the permission applies only to wine or beer and not to spirits. You should check with the cruise company to see whether this option is available to you. Even if the option is available on your particular ship and cruise, you might have an issue concerning whether your grandmother is acceptable as a "legal guardian" -- maybe yes and maybe no. Technically, a legal guardian is an adult who has been appointed by the court as such, and not simply an adult designated by a parent.

I'm sure some cruise ships might change the age but it depends on the company. If you're near Mexico, the drinking age is 18 anyway so a cruise around Mexico, it should stay that way. If all else fails, bring your own liquor on the cruise and drink up.

    Consumption of Alcohol

Once you've left port, the minimum age for the consumption of alcohol varies by cruise line.

Fred. Olsen Cruise Line, Oceania and P&O Cruises allow all passengers 18 and older to consume any type of alcoholic beverage they choose.

The minimum drinking age for all alcoholic beverages on all Azamara, Celebrity and Royal Caribbean ships is 21. However, on cruises departing from European and South American countries, where the legal drinking age is typically lower than 21, a parent who is sailing with his or her son(s) and/or daughter(s) who is between the ages of 18 to 20, may sign a waiver allowing the 18 to 20 year old to consume alcoholic beverages.

Carnival, Costa, Cruise West, Crystal, Cunard, Disney, Holland America, Hurtigruten, MSC Cruises, Norwegian, Paul Gauguin Cruises, Princess, Regent Seven Seas, Seabourn, SeaDream, Silversea, Star Clippers, Uniworld, Viking River Cruises, Voyages of Discovery and Windstar require passengers to be at least 21 to consume any type of alcohol.

The cruise ships have a minimum age of 21. It doesn't change just because they are somewhere where it is legal on land to drink at a lower age.

  • Europe surprisingly does not have an enforced drinking age. You will be really happy when nobody around you cares. Drink away, but not in front of grandparents thats just not cool. Oh, and don't get too drunk, you will see why. Otherwise have a great cruise trip!
