Why are all lonely hearts web sites phony?

In big letters they offer something free, but they always end up asking for a cc#.

They offer hope not love. Its a marketing strategy which waits for people who look for an easy way to find love without having to put themselves out there and be embarrassed.

Think of it like the sexual enhancement pills on the late night infomercial claiming to do something without saying it actually does. Most are too embarrassed to file for a refund so the company makes money. The company is actually only selling hope.

Source(s): I'm a marketing major and have heard instructors speak of this subject on various subjects related to offering hope to the customer.

Because it is a _business_ no matter what else they may say or promise you, their profit takes precedence over your needs. Understand this as with any business that deals primarily with spiritual and emotional needs such as predicting your future or earning a big income with little work.

Certain words used in advertising cannot be controlled by law; such as improved, best, approved...etc. etc. Certain words are 'ambiguous' which means they have multiple definition's and are subject to the environment in which they appear. The law can only govern advertising claims that are false. "Free" can mean; after approval, "Free to try" or "Free after you pay for shipping and handling. Business' have the right to request proof of age, credit worthiness and not be responsible for shipping charges unless they choose so. I hope this helps with your decision making in the future, good luck.

It's a fact of life that people will go to any length to obtain financial security and if it means ripping off the weak and vulnerable then so be it. Unfortunately this is something that will always be.
