I want to do some bathroom remodeling. I have questions...?

My house is 30 years old and in need of a lot of work done in the three bathroom What do I need to know when hiring someone to do the work? I have never done this before so I really don't know where to start.

I prefer each thing to be done by a professional in that field..plumber, carpenter, electrician, tile installer. Find a good contractor and ask who he sub contracts so you can look into them. Get more than one estimate. Get everything in writing. No question is a bad question. If you do not feel compatible with the contractor, do not deal with him. Ensure all work times are agreed (time of day/night), what is expected from you and from him, payment division agreed, warranties, how long job will take (this usually will be longer so be prepared)..and cannot stress the importance of getting everything in writing signed by you and the contractor. Check references..ask locally for opinions...ask local inspectors who are good to work with. Make sure you have all permits and have the contractor get them (get this agreement in writing). Try to have your fixtures picked out and a good idea of what you want before talking to contractor. It is not their job to decide for you but they can help you in deciding size of tub and shower enclosure and vanities that can fit.

  • Before hiring a contractor know what work you desire and have a general budget for the amount of work to be done.

Do your bathroom planning first understanding items such as what cabinet and counter top styles you desire and what bathroom design you are after if you are changing the layout.

When you do go ahead and decide on a contractor be sure you have a contract stating what work will be done by whom.
