Macular degeneration treatment....what is recommended?

I am interested in Alternative and Nutritional treatments for this disease. I have read about Lucentis eye injections every 28 days. That sounds pretty scary to me! I will see a retinal specialist this week.

You may think this technique, rather weird; but I can assure you it will not harm you in any way; and may very help your condition - at the very least, in will relax and cleanse your eyes.

It's a yoga practice called, "Tratakam". Place yourself in as comfortable a position as possible: just lying in your bed; reclining in an easy chair------------------your choice.

Choose a point approximately 10-12 ft. away; any thing will do, as long as it's absolutely stationary. Stare at it WITHOUT BLINKING - this is most important. After a while, your eyes will begin to "tear": the lacrimal glands will produce this soothing and cleansing fluid. Just let them flow as long as you wish; or until you feel the necessity of wiping them away.

Practice as often as you like, but never to the point where your eyes begin to "feel strained".

    Good luck,

    Alberich

There was this thing about RNAi, where they trick your cells to go on a defensive as if being attacked by a virus. They did develop a drug that reverses macular degeneration, but I'm not sure if it has been FDA approved yet, or what trial phase it's in. I did research on this like 2-3 years ago for class, but I don't know if RNAi research is still going on or abandoned because of political reasons or because it could possibly cure a lot of diseases and that could ruin the pharmaceutical industry. I just know they had RSV and macular degeneration treatment at the top of the pile, and HIV, cancer, hepatitis, and autoimmune diseases are being worked on the best way to deliver the drug to the body safely.

There is no one treatment or procedure that cures macular degeneration but that doesn't mean there aren't treatments, lifestyle choices or supplements that help to improve one's vision or prevent further degeneration of the macula.

    1. Diet and Nutrition

One of the main processes that contributes to macular degeneration and vision loss is chronic inflammation. Exposure to environmental toxins or eating certain foods can be pro-inflammatory. Likewise there are foods that are anti-inflammatory and contribute to reducing chronic inflammation in the body and the eyes.

    2. Stem Cells

Several Phase I clinical trials are now recruiting participants to study the safety of transplanting embryonic stem cells and to determine dosage.

    3. Bionic Retina

Sometime in the near future, possibly as soon as 2013, Phase I clinical trials will begin that involve a simple procedure of implanting a retinal chip into patients with degenerative retinas

    4. Anti-VEGF Treatment

Patients with wet macular degeneration are currently treated with intra-ocular injections of medications that help to dry up leaky blood vessels and prevent the growth of future abnormal capillaries.

    5. Macular Pigment

Taking antioxidants called carotenoids, like lutein and zeaxanthin, are known to increase macular pigment density. A higher macular pigment density protects the macula from blue light and helps to prevent macular degeneration.

    6. Eyeglasses and lenses

Wearing blue-light protection glasses and lenses like T‘aime Eyewear http://www.halovis.com/

It depends on whether you have the wet or dry form of the condition. Most opthalmologists recommend a special vitamin for eyes like Preservision.

STOP reading all this crazy stuff--it will scare the crap out of you. ALWAYS go to a good eye doctor. You only get one set of eyes--don't screw them up!!! Good luck.
