Can I use a server pc as a desktop pc?
Im am interested in buying the motherboard from a server (Asus K8N-DRE) and using it as my normal desktop computer. The main reason for this is because i found it for really cheap (about $25) and it seems like it would be a powerhouse with 2 processors and up to 16Gb of RAM. But can these be used like a regular PC or are there some limitations to what i will be able to do. I would want to run windows xp pro on it as well. Any thoughts on this?

That board is currently selling for 13 dollars on Buy.com.
However, you will get what you pay for. A server motherboard technically can be used in a home PC, but there are other considerations that you need to keep in mind. First, this board has no audio built in. So, expect to purchase a sound card. You can get a decent one for 20 to 30 bucks. Also, as far as the 'dual processors' go, does this board _require_ two processors? If so, the added expense of buying the second processor must figure in to your buying decision. Also, considering the age of this motherboard, are those processors even available these days? If so, some server-specific processors (like the Intel Xenons line) are insanely expensive. Check out the costs of buying those processors before making a decision. It could well cost you double what a regular AMD motherboard would cost you.
Dual processors are really not a big deal these days. Most processors are dual core, which is nearly the same as having two processors on the same motherboard. And as far as the RAM capability.... in reality, 16 Gigs is so far outside of what a normal home user would ever need, its not even worth considering. If you really must have 16 Gigs at some point in the future, it will probably be at a time when this current motherboard and processor are so hopelessly outdated that you need a new computer anyway.
I would stay away from this mobo, if it were me.

While a server and desktop system are similar, servers typically have higher-capacity and faster hard drives, faster processors, more RAM, and better networking capabilities than a desktop system. This is like asking "what's the difference between a personal auto and a taxi or a police car?" At one level, it's how they're used. If you license a personal car to carry passengers and use it that way, it's a taxi. If you paint it blue, put a light bar on the roof and then police officers drive it on the job, it's a police car. However, if you know up front that a vehicle will be used as a taxi or a police car, you get it with upgraded or specialized equipment. Those aren't required in principle, but they make a huge difference in practice. It's the same with servers. You can use just about anything as a server, but for serious use you need upgraded components in several areas. These ain't cheap, but they're worth it. Some computer manufacturers sell servers through different channels that most of us buy our PCs, too. These channels typically provide a higher level of support, geared to the technically competent user, but again it ain't free. Is this required in order to call something a server? Not at all. Do most people who buy servers find it worthwhile? You betcha.

You need to make sure you're getting the complete package with that server. It might not have an important piece, like a hard disk. Or a processor. Or memory.
You probably also won't get a monitor, keyboard or mouse, since servers tend to be headless in racks or server rooms.
Server are loud. The have larger fans for faster processors (sometimes more than one) and require extra cooling.

First of all, a sErVeR motherboard for $25????
wOw mAn...
and you will have to run a 64bit OS in it as said by the above.
And, i recommend windows 7 ultimate 64bit edition.
Although XP is better in performance, the way 7 handles processes is quite impressive.

Shouldn't be any problem at all, but if you want to use upto 16GB of memory, you will have no choice but to go for a 64bit operating system as 32bit operating systems limit memory to around 3.25Gb
