is there any real difference [superiority] between awd systems in the new forester vs the new non-cvt outback?

i read somewhere that the new forester has a cheaper awd system than it used to.. comparing auto trans models to auto trans models only....is that true?.. any real world differences?... is the awd system in the 6cyl 5 speed auto outback any better?..is the outback worth 2-3 thousand more?..any opinions?

I'm doubting the "cheaper awd system" in the new Forester. Subaru has a thing going on with the Outback and Forester, and they'd hardly want to kill the geese laying those golden eggs. All of the running gear for the cars is off-the-shelf, tried and true, engineering already paid for. Their engine and transmission lines are now pure money machines.

Just a few years ago, the difference in price between a Forester and a Subaru was a few hundred dollars. I used to wonder why anyone would buy the Forester to save so little. The Outback is quite a bit more car.

I can't see buying the 3.6 litre six cylinder engine (256 HP, 247 lb-ft torque) when the turbocharged 2.5 litre (265 HP, 258 lb-ft torque) outperforms it. And you get the six speed manual transmission with the 2.5 turbo.

Source(s): I own a 1997 Outback wagon with the 165 HP 2.5 normally-aspirated engine (five speed manual tranny). The car runs like new with 140,000 miles on the odometer. I also bought a 2008 Outback wagon (170 HP 2.5) for my wife (four speed automatic). She's already put 40,000 miles on the car and loves it. I'm a mechanical engineer.
