Well, we know Obama wasn't lying when he said he wouldn't increase taxes on people earning less than 250 thousand dollars a single dime. He actually had quite a few dimes in mind.

I am still a little sceptical, despite the fact that I really care about our wild places. I do however think that we should take the threat seriously. The evidence proves that natural cycles of weather occur on a grand scale. There were once lions, hippos and elephants wandering the UK countryside, about 120,000 years ago. That was an interglacial warm spell. The thing that is not disputed, is that these things happen naturally, after all the Scottish countryside is full of glacial features. However, the evidence suggests that our added contribution to global warming is making it happen at a FASTER rate than life can cope with. We are talking about climate change happening in decades, rather than spanning centuries or thousands of years. Wildlife has coped with climate change fairly well in the past. woodlands and grasslands can move at their snails pace, to keep track of the conditions that suit them. These days there are added issues. We now have our wildlife trapped in pockets that are surrounded by farmland. The natural "corridors" are gone. Wildlife charities are doing their best to make our wild places more joined up. If climate change continues as it is and there is no space for things to move, then we will lose a lot. Anyway, I think my main issue is that I don't want it to be true.

No long term difference. Here in the UK we pay at least this for petrol and it's made no long term difference.

Economists have long recognised this. What happens is that initially people alter their behaviour, in this case by perhaps cutting back on non-essential journeys. However, when the shock of the price rise wears off, people go back to doing whatever they used to do and simply bear the extra cost without even really thinking about it.

The difference is that the government has an extra very handy source of tax income. One that it is not likely to give up easily.

I actually think that what will happen is that hybrids will become a mainstream part of almost all cars, thus bringing fuel standards to a new level without the need for punitive taxation.

Perfect way to start a little thing called runaway inflation. Goods need to be transported to be sold. They won't get there on their own so up goes the price for delivery which is passed on to consumers. It's the ordinary person that is affected not the producers as they will recoup the cost with higher prices and the circle continues. This is just plain stupidity.

this is nothing new. in his 1992 book "earth in the balance"Al Gore insisted that gasoline taxes must be raised to prohibitive levels to get people out of cars.

its ironic that the government already makes several times as much profit on each gallon of gas sold as the the oil company who produced & marketed that gallon.

these coercive utopians wont stop until everyone has to use street cars & trains for transportation as they did in the big government statists ideal city, Moscow in the 1930's.

as long as individuals can afford to drive cars they can choose to live & work wherever they want.

this is totally unacceptable to big brother types who think they know whats best for you & the thought that people are out there going anywhere they want anytime they want drives the statists crazy & keeps them from sleeping at night.

According to laws of supply and demand it would help, however in the US industry contributes more to man made climate change than transportation, especially agriculture. The increase in gas prices would probably drive up input costs for small farmers, pushing them further out of the marketplace, and worsen carbon emissions. If they raise the cost of gas at the pump to target only everyday drivers, most likely it will hurt smaller gas stations who need to eat some of the increase in order to compete, impacting employment figures. There are better ways to address global warming.

I dont think anyone reduce the useage of fuels by reducing taxes

It will only harm the poor sections in the society.

It was this exact stupidity that John Kerry spoke of during his election campaign and why he failed.

America will go broke if that ever happens.

    NO.

But this is exactly the kind of thinking you would expect from the people at Harvard.
