    E is correct.

    A) no, b/c smooth muscle is also connected by gap junctions (as is cardiac muscle)

    B) no, b/c skeletal muscle is also striped (I prefer the more elegant term "striated")

    C) no, b/c smooth muscle also cannot be contracted at will (i.e., it's involuntary, like cardiac muscle)

    D) no, b/c cardiac muscle is involuntary (so this statement is false)

    E) cardiac muscle cells are branched--they are connected by desmosomes in a network
