I cant get car into any gear but when ignition is off I can get all gears Why?
Its a Mazda MX5 mk 1, its been working fine then just today when I got into the car to drive it I found that once ignition started, I couldnt get any gears, then I turned it off and it would go into all gears easily. What do you think it could be? Any idea of cost to repair?? Thanks

Bad clutch or hydraulics for clutch.

I am a Miata owner, and have been for some years now (1990 models).
So I am sure that there is a problem with the clutch hydraulics. I am still on my original master cylinders. So I feel sure that is not the problem. But I am not positive that it is the slave either. But that is the only place that I have had problems. If this is the case, filling the reservoir and pumping up the system will get you back on the road. If not then the hose from that connects the slave to the chassis tubing has ruptured. These may take a while to get a replacement for. There is an up-grade at Miata Mania that is better to use then a stock part.
The slave is not the hardest thing to replace, I can do it with the car in the drive way, but I need help getting it bleed. I have taken to replacing the complete line from the master to the slave with a single braided line from Summit Racing by using the adapters for Jap brake lines.
Another item based on long term ownership, sometimes this failure is a precursor to a worn out clutch disk. Leakage can be because of age, or because the slave is nearing the limits of travel. My clutches last well over 100K miles, so if yours has not been done, it maybe soon. If this is the case think about a flywheel upgrade. I put a ten pound flywheel on one of mine and am happy with the results. I found mine on e-bay for much less then one from the major Miata parts suppliers. I stuck with a full disk for the clutch. Now might be the right time to find the best buy on a clutch replacement, both where you but the parts and who puts them in.

The car is a manual gear box I presume. Clutch issue if it is. If the clutch is hydraulically actuated, it could be the master or slave cylinder, check the fluid level to see if the fluid has leaked out. If it has, find the leak and you found the bad part. If it is cable operated, maybe the cable snapped or something let loose from the clutch actuator lever. Your pedal would drop to the floor without resistance if that were the case. Does the pedal feels different? Lastly, but least likely the clutch disc stuck to the flywheel or pressure plate. Had that happen to a car that sat for several months but it is unusual. Hope this helps....good luck

I agree with the others. The clutch is dragging. Best scenario is that is needs adjustment, although this is rare these days. Most likely it is breaking up and not disengaging fully. This will make gear selection virtually impossible with the engine running.
Cost wise is difficult to say. But include a Mazda dealer when getting quotes as a benchmark, and use them if there is nothing in it. Include the release bearing in the work as this is always advisable and costs very little extra.

its a clutch issue but if it was fine yesterday I would start by looking for the clutch master and making sure it has fluid. Usually Dot 3 brake fluid. Its usually at the top right corner under the hood and is like the size around of a roll of quarters. Don't mistake it for the brake master which will be attached to a large drum looking thing. top it off pump the clutch pedal like 10 times and try again. Take it in for servicing if this works.

ok, if you anything about cars, you should know what the distributor is, if you unplug the gray plugs on it, it will shut the car of safely. or you can open the cover to the fuse box under the hood on the passanger side and remove any relay or fuse that says EFI, for fuel injection. if you can do this then you can fix the problem, which is the electrical part behind the ignition switch, which is called a ignition switch pig tail. good luck

it sounds like your clutch has stopped functioning. when the engine is turning and the tranny is not the two cannot mesh, but when neither is turning they can. that is the purpose of the clutch. it depends on which part has stopped working to determine the repair cost.

check the clutch fluid.......could b low.....if its really low will need to b bled(if ur really lucky that is all the problem)
more likely u have clutch issues master or slave cylinder failure....and if ur going to have to pull the trans u need to replace everything...clutch; pressure plate; have the flywheel turned; new slave cylinder; throwout bearing; pilot bearing;check the fork and ball;and replace the engine rear sale and trans front seal...and the output shaft seals for the axles....
good luck
