How to update old counters to sell my house?
My house is going on the market in just a couple of weeks. We have old "harvest gold" countertops that we didn't replace because we were going to do an addition and new kitchen. Now my husband's been transfered so we have to sell with the old kitchen still here.
So... should I go with standard laminate ($200 or so), high-res custome laminate w/ tile backsplash ($400) or do I have to spring for granite/ quartz? Granite's the "standard" in our neighborhood - as people remodel, they're putting granite in... maybe 50% have it.

It sounds to me like you are NOT going to do the full kitchen remodel, am I right? But it sounds like it really could use it?
In my opinion, I would not do the granite, that could cost you 2-3K.
I would just go with the lower end laminate, to just make the kitchen look a little more current, rather than from the 70s--which is what harvest gold tells me. If you can, maybe repaint the cabinet doors, and add some new handles.
If I was buying a house, I would either want it to be totally remodeled, or at least clean and decent looking. I wouldn't want to pay for new granite counters, on top of old looking cabinets.
(Depending on how handy you are, there is a way to paint the laminate counters, but you really need to do good job, because you don't want the paint peeling. You need special paint and you reall need to prep the counter top properly.)

You are right to want to update it for resale. You want it to look clean and "new" . The expense of a granite is NOT warranted here though. Let the next people worry about that. For all your expense they may choose to rip the kitchen and the very expensive granite may not match.
You can put the 200$ post forms in or paint the counter to look like granite. It is a process though the results are amazing. http://www.ehow.com/how_2262652_paint-look-like-re...

I understand your dilemna, however, the most important features of the house is usually the kitchen. I would replace or relaminate. Lowe's has a great looking, cost effective, countertop that looks like marble, granite. I had a cabinet in my office that had a broken top and held the fax machine and a printer, asked our shop guy to go and find a nice countertop to fit the cabinet. It was a blue, and had flecks in it -- beautiful and low cost -- is still there and I'm not!
