Neighbors' Dog(s) Poop By Our Yard?

One or two of our neighbors' dogs poop by our yard by the garbage bin. We've never caught the owners who never pick up after their pets. Our city is very lax about this thing.

1. What can I pour/put on that one spot that would give off a smell dogs dislike but would be tolerated by humans?

2. Any other alternatives? Surveillance cameras are out of the question (can't afford it, can't have it stolen).

Thanks for not posting B.S. answers (no pun intended).

they poop BY your yard, or IN your yard?

If it's by your yard, you can't do anything.

If it's in your yard, say something or put up a sign.

At least she's picking up the poop and not leaving in there. But, it is common courtesy NOT to let you dog poop in other peoples yards, especially when there are other communal grassy areas. If the HOA won't allow a border or fence, can you speak with them about this issue? Maybe at the next meeting they can make a new rule that dogs can not be walked on others property (I believe this is called Trespassing, is it not?) She should also be picking up her trash she leaves behind. Some people really lack common sense and proper etiquette.

Had a neighbour once that used to let his dog defecate in my back yard. I would just pick it up and throw it at the side of his house. His neighbour on the other side saved the dogshit in a paper bag and set it on the back floor of his car one hot Summer day - even left a card.

The problem solved itself after that.

Over the ensuing years I have discovered an even better ally; the Health Department or County Health officer. These people get results where few others will even bother to return your calls. I go straight through these people nowadays because they can take the errant dog owner to court and make him clean up the mess.

Nobody should have to be inconvenienced or out of pocket as the result of another dog owners ignorance. Make them pay and be inconvenienced for their actions.

Well, unfortunately, there's no easy way to stop the dogs unless you actually catch the owners. One way might be to put up a little sign by the spot saying "please clean up after your dog" or something like that and hope that the owners are kind enough to respect that. You must however clean the area and maybe try to hose the area down so you can remove as much of the smell as possible. There are less chances that the dog will go there again.

Call you local city and find out what the laws are about misplaced poop. Then take appropriate action. Leave you neighbors a note and asked that they pick up after their dogs, but be sure this is important enough to you so that if you start a conflict you are willing to live with the situation. Some times it is better to just relax and forget; after all you did say "by our yard" not "in your yard".

You might try some pepper sprinkled in that area and see if it help.

I hear you. I have dogs and I buy those little bags and pick up after my dogs. It annoys me that people walk around like it's not their problem. They are just *******. You can buy some of that Bitter Yuck stuff. You'd have to keep doing it it doesn't last forever. You can print up a sign and post it on those little stakes that says the lawn has been chemically treated and could be harmful to pets. That would stop me if I were them.

There's stuff you can buy at pet stores that supposedly keeps animals off your flower beds, I don't know if it works.

I am a responsible dog owner and this infuriates me as it gives all of us a bad name. Any chance you could go out with a shovel at night, scoop it up and throw it on their grass? Or put it in a plastic bag and leave it on their doorstep?

Frankly when our neighbor let their dog poop on our lawn and didn't pick it up I just put it all in a paper bag and set it on their porch next to their door. I did this twice and they started making sure their dog was tied up in his own back yard.

(My next step would have been to put in on the hood of his car WITHOUT the bag, but he got the hint.)

Look in any dog supply store or catalog for a dog repelant.

You could also set up a motion activated sprinker and it will spray both dog and owner.. they are usually sold to deter deer and other animals from gardens, so look in a home supply store

Don't spray anything smelly, they'll just wanna poop and pee there more; dogs are gross. I would just try to watch when the owner is walking his dog and catch it in the act.

You could also call the police because it is most likely in violation of your city laws.

How about just knock on your neighbors' door, and tell them to PICK up after their dogs?
