Newborn getting enough sleep?

My daughter is 7 weeks old, and she is incredibly calm and relaxed. She rarely cries and fusses; however, the past few days have been quite different. She's been much fussier when she's awake, and last night she slept for 8 hours without waking up. She usually sleeps for 6, so the 8 hours seemed a bit extreme for her. During the day, her naps are only lasting about 30 minutes. She wakes up, eats just a little, stays up and either plays or fusses, eats a little more, and then starts to settle down to sleep only to wake up 30 minutes later. It seems to me her fussiness is probably from not getting enough sleep, but do you have any other ideas? And if it is from sleepiness, what suggestions do you have to fix this. Thank you!

  • My daughter hasn't slept much during the day since she was about 3 weeks old. Her nights have gotten longer and longer. She used to wake up once during the night usually about 3 or 4 a.m. and then go back to sleep until 7 or 8 sometimes 9 a.m. She now sleeps 10-11 hours at night and only take two or three cat naps of about 20-30 minutes at a time. I asked the pediatrician about this and they said she's probably sleeping longer at night because she's not sleeping during the day and to consider it a blessing. I always though infants slept a lot, but my little one proved me wrong. I would much rather her sleep through the night than to be up all night. There really isn't anything you can do, I just think my little one is afraid of missing something. Her nights will probably progressively get longer and you will be thankful for a baby who sleeps nights rather than days.

BTW - my baby fusses from gas not from being tired.

My son is 11 months old now. He has always taken 20-30 min. naps. I was concerned about this at first, but the more research I did, I found that every baby is different and that it's normal. They say that babies should nap for at least 45 min so they go through a complete sleep cycle but that doesn't mean that if they don't something bad is going to happen. When she's tired, she'll sleep. One thing I have noticed, if I take a nap with my son (or at least lay there for a while) he will sleep longer. Babies love the smell of their parents, it soothes them. If you have the ability to do so, I suggest letting her take a nap on you while you watch a little tv or something. Doesn't have to be every nap, but maybe 3-4 times a week.

You can't every baby has their own schedule. My baby couldn't keep his eyes open past 3 hours of being awake and he took long naps (but only slept a max. of 5 hours over the nighttime). His cousin who was being bottle fed would sleep 10 hours over night but only have a few 30 min. naps during the day.

Babies are on their own schedule. She does not know night from day. If you want her to sleep at night, keep her up more during the day. Give her baths to wake her up, play with her, etc. You need to get her on a schedule, she's still little, so there's time.

Maybe you should ask your doctor. My daughter was doing that for a little while after are big move. Has there been any changes recently?
