When I was a kid we used to make up our own games. Do kids do that nowadays?

We made up play acting games, writing the stories as we went.

Update:

Do your kids make up play acting games, and the stories necessary to play them?

They do indeed. I work with children (grades K-5) and they are always play acting. All sorts of stuff. It's realy cute. Yesterday they made up a "hotel" and asked us adults if we want to stay in their hotel. They also play school a lot & make lessons for the younger kids. Even the BOYS will put on the dress up clothes :)

And yes Ginger is so right! Our kids are CONSTANTLY playing dog & cat. They get on all fours, & bark & meow, etc .

I'm ten, and I've been making up games since forever!

2nd grade: A game called :"The camping game!"

    3rd Grade: More camping gameyness.

4th grade: The super legion of superheros!

5th grade: (Now) ???? Tons of acting, role playing, stuff like that!

It really depends on your personality. Sure, I could play on the computer and DS, and watch TV all day. Many kids do. But I'm just very different.

I'm 13, so I'm still a kid; and of course we do!

In this day and age, the need for imagination is diminishing, what with computers and Xboxes that don't require any creativity on your part. Of course there are kids who have relied on the electronics to make up stories for them, but some of us still try to hold on to the magic of making up your own games.

I remember in 3rd grade, when my friend Nicole and her brother and I would play in her backyard, pretending that we were dogs, living in this world of talking dogs (I know, it was random) and going on all sorts of adventures to save the world. We made up a whole story line, and each of us would portray several different characters in order to convey the idea of a mass army of dogs. Even though we certainly had access to computers and GameBoys and stuff in the house, our backyard adventures were more exciting.

In 5th grade, my friend Hope and I would also come up with a lot of different storylines and such at recess (and this was only about 3 years ago, too, so things haven't changed too much). We pretended that we were teens traveling the world and having all sorts of exotic adventures. Or maybe we had stumbled upon some exciting new world, full of mythical creatures. At some point, we even wanted to record all of the ideas that we'd come up with into a book, and try to get it published, although that never happened.

And all throughout elementary school, we would often make up little games aside from our complex adventure sagas. "Thunder Tag" was something I came up with in 2nd grade, and I still remember how to play it. Now, I don't have quite as much time for playing pretend, and most of us consider that to be too childish, but I think that some of us still try to use our imagination in other ways. Many of us spend all day playing computer games, but one of my friends has started using various softwares to write his own computer games. He's only in 8th grade, but he's already has a website filled with his creations. Of course, that's not really the same as playing pretend in your backyard, but it's a start.

I'm 19, so I was a kid not too long ago....

Yes, we would make up games. Or we would role-play. We'd often pretend to be a family of dogs and walk around on all fours, wagging our tails. So fun!

it depends how young the kids are...

if they are under the age of 8 then they will play pretend games.

ages 8-10 will play games like hide and seek and tag.

anyone over the age of ten doesn't "play" they "hang out".

I often wonder the same question. I'm only 20 but my childhood revolved around manhunt and fake murder games, or we made our own movies. It was great. Kids are so spoiled these days with their new fangled computers and video games!

I used to do that a few years ago when i was younger and we did have video games and other electronics to the extent that we do now. From what ive seen they dont do it nearly as much as me and my friends did when we were their age, everything is now electronic, if you wanna be a princess in a castle just put the disk in the machine and turn on the TV...
