It was the division within the Republican Party that caused it. Garfield was in the Half-Breed camp and his assassin, Charles Guiteau, was a member of the Stalwarts. Guiteau was angry about being turned down for a government job and blamed the Half-Breeds, since they were in power. He assassinated Garfield so that Chester Arthur, a Stalwart, would be in charge. Upon his arrest Guiteau was quoted as saying "I am a Stalwart of the Stalwarts! I did it and I want to be arrested! Arthur is President now!"
