Oracle is the same on both Winz and *nix OS, so does not matter which one you pick. I know that you can download (large) free installer for *nix, don't know if you can get it free for Winz.

Learn Winz or *nix? I would say both, many places will use both for different purposes.

Unless you intend to become IT support personnel or do OS development you don't have to go too deep into OS.

I wouldn't limit myself to just Oracle. Or just SQL Server, or just MySQL.

Realize that there is ANSI standards for SQL, and there are the appropriate API calls for each database type, but most don't code in that.

Also, Windows allows you to use ODBC (Open Database Connectivity), which would allow you to not care about what your backend database is defined as. There are also other options when you start looking into the .NET technologies.

Try not to think in limited terms, and realize that things in this field are coming closer together every day. Think of it this way. Apple's OS used to be proprietary and not well documented. Now they're using a *nix flavor and building on top of it, and can therefore run under several different CPU type of environments.

In the long run if you want to get into database management and server admin work, you will be much better served to learn Linux. However, as others have pointed out, you can learn oracle on both Windows and Linux based operating systems.

If you want to learn Linux, a great place to start is Ubuntu Linux, because they go out of their way to make it as simple as possible to use, but you still get the power of Linux at your fingertips.
