Is OTC cold medicine OK while breast feeding?

OTC cold meds are safe to use while nursing. The only risk is that you may see a temporary drop in your milk supply (they dry up EVERYTHING) but they won't harm your baby. (Dr. Hale and the AAP both say that they are safe.)

I had a cold 2 months after my daughter was born, and I called the pharmacist and asked, and she said that the majority of the OTC cold medicines we NOT safe to take. The only thing I could really take was some sort of kids medicine. (I'm not sure what the brand was or what she said to avoid in the adult meds).

I just drank tea, and used Vicks, as well as cough drops.

She said No to Buckleys and nyquil.

Call your Ob, I believe many of the OTC meds you took while pregnant are safe during breast feeding, but Tylenol Cold was not one, you have to be very careful about what you take, as many of the meds pass right through your milk to baby...make a phone call, it only takes a second, and you will have no regrets of putting baby at risk! Call your obgyn. Dont trust answers on here about this lol! Even if you called them right now, they have an answering service and they will page a doctor that you can ask. Better safe than sorry, because certain caugh and cold meds can really hurt baby. Good luck.

You should not take any decongestants while breastfeeding- they can dry up your milk. You can use a nasal spray, take a steamy shower, or take tylenol. Call a lactation consultant if you want more options.

Most all Tylenol products are OK while breastfeeding. As long as it does not have psudophedrine in it, you are OK.

dr thomas hale actually does the research on medications taken while breastfeeding, unlike the manufacturers (who rely on blanket Class B or C classifications).
