Need help choosing the right Birth Control. Our current method is not working for us. What do you recommend?
Alright let me lay out the situation for all of you before you answer. Thank you for your patience.
1. My girlfriend and I have started using Birth Control 3 months ago.
2. We both do not like using condoms, and she only wants to take pills. No shots, patches, etc.
3. I do not know what she is exactly on now, but we are both not happy with the side effects. I know we got it from Planned Parenthood, and that it is a low dose.
4. The two main side effects are decreased libido, and we have to use lubrication(KY) because she no longer can "get wet" or vasocongestion does not occur. When we have to take a break "hold on baby I need to get my lube" really ruins the moment. Same reason why we don't like condoms. We lost the spontaneous-ness of our sex life.
5. The biggest kicker is that foreplay no longer has an effect on her. She used to finish 3-4 times when we "fool around". That has not been happening either, which really hurts my self confidence.
Our sex life has went from spectacular to almost non-existent since we started this birth control. Going off the pill is also not an option, we have had to use Plan B 5 or so times in a 4 month period. We love to have peace of mind.
I know there is some birth control out there that is right for us. That is why I come to you. What birth control method do you ladies utilize? What would you recommend for us to try next?
I know we went to Planned Parenthood to get our first batch of birth control, but I am will to pay almost any price to get the right birth control. So money is not a factor. If you need more information please ask.
Thank you so much for your input.

If your girlfriend is experiencing loss of libido from the birth control pill she is currently using, the bad thing is she may likely still experience it no matter what pill she goes on. The only way to find out for sure is to try different pills until she finds one that works for her. It's a matter of trial and error. What worked for other women and myself may not work for her. I was on Aviane (generic of Alesse) a low dose pill for the last seven years I was on the pill. That worked for me with no side effects. She can try the high dose pills, but they have more side effects and can have bad aftereffects.
She can try the Ring and see if that helps. She should talk about that with her doctor and other options she can try.
Experiencing dryness during sex is normal for many women even if not on the pill. I have always had that problem, but my libido was increased while I was on the pill. We always incorporated the Astroglide into our lovemaking.
I know it must be frustrating for you and her. I hope I helped with my experience.

Well if you don't want estrogen containing birth control, then I would suggest just condoms to be honest. A lot of the other hormonal methods are being linked to a lot of health problems right now and many have horrible side effects (ex. massive weight gain with Depo). And you are right that estrogen products are not good when breastfeeding because it passes through breastmilk. But you don't need BC for the first six months anyway b/c prolactin will prevent the release of eggs, so you won't get pregnant. After the six months, you can try the mini-pill (progestogen only). Hope this helps a bit. EDIT: Answer Machine, the NuvaRing is not put into your cervix...OMG, that would suck really bad. It just goes into your vagina, and stays there for three weeks, which in my opinion is disgusting...

If she doesn't like hormonal side-effects, it might be a good idea to look into the non-hormonal IUD? It's approximately 99.4% effective when fitted properly with a nearly non-existent margin for user error (unlike the pill, which can fall to, I believe, 92%), lasts up to 10-12 years (she can have it taken out at any time before then as well), will not affect natural libido, and the only possible side-effects are heavier bleeding and cramping during menses (which tend to subside after 3-6 cycles). You don't have to have had children to acquire one, either. I had mine inserted when I was 17 and nulliparous, and I'm quite thrilled with it. No condoms, no hormones, no loss in spontaneity... Easily worth a little extra blood and such once a month. If you're interested, this site has a lot of information about IUDs in general:

Sometimes simply being on one type of birth control for a long period of time can cause decreased libido, other times it goes up and down... every woman is different. I had to deal with the same thing with my last GF once and it is really tough. Staying away from patches and shots... I'd recommend looking into the Nuva Ring. It worked well for us. You won't have to worry about condoms, no shots, no patches, no pills... one insert and it just stays in. If that's no good I don't know what to tell ya pal. :-(
Oh yeah... don't depend on Plan B pill as birth control. That pill is essentially a massive dose of normal birth control pills. Huge influx of estrogen and other hormones on any sort of normal basis is a thoroughly bad idea.

I would suggest her trying Nuvaring. Its very convenient. You leave it in for three weeks and then at the end of the third week, you take it out for one week. That week you have it out, the girl gets her period. If she wants to skip it (with the doctors permissions) she can remove it after the third week and immediately replace it with another ring. Nuvaring has the same active ingredients as the pill. I'm currently on Nuvaring and I was very careful with which birth control I chose. I've had no personal problems with weight gain or "getting wet". Infact, while on nuvaring, a side affect is more lubrication at times than normal, so she wouldn't have a problem with that.
I work at a pharmacy as a pharmacy technician and this is a very popular form of birth control. If your girl can get past the idea of having to insert and remove it, otherwise it is never noticable while in, and most partners do not even feel it during sex. Hope I helped!

First of all, Planned Parenthood is a place I would never recommend to anyone. Birth control pills are widely available at OB/GYN offices everywhere. They would be most appropriate to dispense safe birth control pills determined by blood levels, hormone levels, etc. If you really want to use a hormonal method of birth control, then try a different brand/dosage. Some women simply cannot handle BC pills--it can make them sick, tired, crampy, low sex drive, etc. Also, it can cause blood clots, stroke, etc. My husband and I use ONLY condoms and withdrawal methods when we are avoiding pregnancy. We have never had an "oops" baby. Let me put it this way: If you have unprotected sex, depositing your semen inside her vagina, EVERYDAY for an entire month....you only have a 33% chance of conceiving a child. Having that same sort of sex only every OTHER day, the chance decreases to 18%. I would really reach deep inside and think of all the consequences and risks you take when you use any type of birth control method.

It might take several different pills for you guys to find the one that works best for you. I know that's probably not the answer you wanted to hear, but, go back to PP and tell them it's not working and you need to try something else.

yes I suggest Seasonique which decreases periods which allows more play time.
