Swords go back to antiquity
Knights carried swords for offencive / defencive use , but also as a symbol of status , only Gentlemen , Lords , Royalty anyone of rank was allowed to own / carry a sword , and the right to bear arms Common people or common soldiers carried staves ,cudgels, spears , billhooks etc The reason in England we drive on the left stems from the time men carried swords , they would pass one another on their left hand side so their sword arm could not be seized The Stiletto (an Italian invented dagger) was designed to penetrate the thin slits in the visor of the knights helmet, once he was " unhorsed " or wounded it must have been a gruesome way to die
Swords, Armour etc would only have been within the reach of the rich and powerful , because of the enormous cost involved
The tradition of " gentry " bearing arms ( swords ) can still be observered to this day in Officers of the armed forces and other notary`s wearing swords at ceremonial occasions
Edit
The reason men`s jackets button on the right is so the sword when drawn would not snag in clothing , as it would have done if jackets were tied women`s side Button s did not come into use till much later , but the reason stems from the sword

Back during the middle ages making swords was a sophisticated technology. It was difficult to create a process by which you could work a metal in such a way that it was hard enough to keep a sharp edge, but not so hard that it would be brittle and break.
Before the invention of gunpowder, swords were the most effective weapon for a soldier or knight, (except for maybe the long bow). A person riding on horseback, with a sword, could effectively kill many warriors who were not similarly armed.

Medieval Knights use swords because it was the only weapon of their survival so they had no other choice to carry with them hence they carried sword. In the medieval times they had no guns or categories of knives just like we have now to choose.

They used swords because:
1. There were no guns
2. Swords were probably the greatest way for penetrating the skin
3. They were all semi-similar thus for easy for a welder to make
4. They were a good way of combat style by striking and defending
Hope this helps!

Why do people eat using a fork? It goes through the object easily, and quickly. Not too bulky to carry around either. Swords were always a noble thing as well.

It was one of the best forms of weaponry back then; people didn't have guns or explosives; they had to use swords, bows and arrows, shields, metal armor, etc. All wars were fought with weapons like swords, spears, and maces in those days!

They used swords because that was the technology they had. The evolution of the weapon led to the sword and similar weapons like pikes, but the size and shape of the sword made it the most honorable tool available.

At that time it was the most efficient weapon for combat, mace's and other things were used but the sword was not only lightweight but took up little space.

Well you see, the development of the "sword" comes back from biblical times, where one man fell onto a sharpened stick and died due to excessive spinal fluid loss. Which then, a spectator of this tragic event, decided to fashion a weapon so he can kill his enemies.
The man who fashioned this weapon, this superb stabbing tool, became ruler of England. His reign was filled with blasphemous mocking of the cross, and it's use as a weapon. So then, one man sharpened a cross, and formed a stake, then a epic battle proceeded in which the man with the sword won.
This started the rumors, which soon became fact, of vampires. This sword wield ruler was not stabbed in the chest with this stake, and that is why he won the battle. Then he ended up being assassinated by his servant, Dracula. Then Dracula formed his cult of sword-wielding vampires, which eventually evolved into the "Knight" of which you are referring to.
